New mix done in auria

edited December 2017 in Creations

Shutterwax song from a few years ago that we never finished mixing, did this in auria today. Listen closely on the “drunken stage door trappings” section to hear Frank grunting loudly while playing drums...
I Knew a lot less about tracking back then, so I had to do a lot of work to guitar sounds to help them not step on each other, but I think it works now...

you're a great band - tight play with lots of emotion B)
Soundstaging in the mix doesn't really work yet, though.
Some (intended I guess) pumping comes across quite artificial.
Imh ears it's first of all the ambience of the individual tracks that doesn't melt into one virtual stage. This is something that puzzles me with a lot of IOS only tracks, even my own.
(which always drags me to apply that part in a desktop DAW)
It's bewildering because (better) IOS reverbs aren't bad on their own in any way.

  • Interesting, I'll listen again with that in mind. I will say though that this was not recorded that well, so it was a lot of work to get it to work at all. This was on the original cassette Jeff had given me of his original songs almost 20 years ago, he had a cool recording of this done on his Yamaha 4 track. We did some rearranging from that but it's one of his songs that always really stuck with me.

I will listen again in the car today though, I finished this at 2am. On the master bus I used Saturn on the "faster master" preset then recorded it through "master record", the saturation app by the guy who did audio mastering- is very possible that I went about 3 steps too far..

  • Ideas incorporated @Telefunky, thanks for the feedback!
New mix, I ran the rhythm guitar tracks through micswap and worked on the reverb a little to hopefully bring the environment a little more together. My shutterwax partners have this one the thumbs up, so it should be available on bandcamp in a day or two, then I'll replace the soundcloud link with that one. We're going to include the original 4 track demo from before I even met Jeff (more than 20 years ago!).

nah... that didn't work out - the first one sounds much (!) better. ;)
It shurely became wider, but lost punch and loudness, a slight touch of hifi added.

Sorry for the mis-advice, I thought it was a regular multitrack thing, not a cassette tape.
These are much more glued together by natural bleed which has to be considered in the mix. You may try just a bit of room upon the mix of version one.
(personal excuse: I'm not the best early morning listener) o:)
While Tascam 4 tracks have some reputation, the Yammy here really surprised me - cool.

No, this wasnt from a cassette. It is a little quieter than the first mix though, turn it up! I think you'll find the comparison a little better. Our maybe not, but the band was very happy with it so this is the release. Can't please everyone! :D Haha! I really do appreciate you taking the time to listen though, the suggestions were very welcome.

  • yes, the difference in loudness impact is very obvious and I questioned myself if it might fooling me. But better you have some headroom left than the other way round ;)
I try to be spontaneous in my comments, reflecting what the sound triggers in that moment. It's a subjective thing anyway and intended to inspire - not to judge.

  • Its all good, I'm glad that you care enough to comment, it means a lot!
