  • +1 for stopping the needless R bashing. Specific thread with a specific issue (or issues), cool. Bashing at the mere mention of their name? Meh.

  • Has been very little anti Retronyms feeling on this thread so far. Mentioning it so many times first though is more likely to attract it IMO ;) I say this in my best humourous voice ;)

    +1 too...
I've been harsh on them before but changed my tone to giving more constructive feedback.
Over the years I've become less 'trigger happy' when it comes buying all new apps...
(I do have more apps than I have time to use them but regardless it will be nice to check out what's cooking).

If Retronyms were allowed to make Korg Gadgets, let’s say, would people go for them?

Funny, because Davis, who wrote the last two gadgets, was at the last Retronyms happy hour.

Instead of gadgets, I would like to see Retroynms evolve a few unique technologies. They've invested a lot in sample chopping for hook and IMPC, and I have to wonder if there is another product in there.

Also, they have some serious audio/design nerdistry there, and I would love to see their take on a modern synth.

I think we all wish the ports would get fixed, but my understanding is that the nature of the Arturia codebase makes it really hard.

  • Stryke gets Link.

  • I just want the ghost notes in iProphet fixed - I would actually like to USE this synth as it sounds great.

Exactly. I don't understand the specifics of why it's so difficult, but apparently, it is so difficult. BTW, did you like the xequence update?

So Gadget isn't made in Japan then? Interesting! I figured Korg was still a very Japan-centric company in terms of product management and development (which makes responding to user feedback sometimes a bit harder).

I think some korg app teams are in japan. This being the reason my ikaossilator rants have gone unanswered

I don't know, but I'm under the impression that there aren't hard geographic lines. A few guys from Japan just went back a few months ago, after being here a while. I think it's pretty fluid

Xequence rules, so yeah - I did. But what I'm really looking forward to is the next Xequence update when they add MIDI file import.

I remember asking the Retronyms team about the iProphet thing and they insist that it's Arturia's issue, yet it seems like Arturia feels that it's Retronyms' problem. So yeah - not holding my breath for that one. It's too bad - iProphet sounds amazing.

Korg has a software branch in the US, actually about half an hour away from johnfromberkeley

Retronyms is unveiling a new technology to wirelessly connect all of its apps, called Blink:

"Unlike anything you've seen before, Blink lets you connect the tempo and sync iMpc/Hook/Tabletop and other apps that adopt Blink through the Blink SDK. Just like AudioCopy before it, Retronyms is setting the standard by which iOS apps communicate. Different tempos will be available in the Blink shop soon after launch."

But isn't that what Ableton Link v3 does?

lol.. same way like AudioCopy is unusable crap as samole librarian, basically it's just shopping platform for sample pack, they bring another "standard" which main purpose is again just sell crap ... Old good Retronyms, no surprise again ..

I think the fact that some believed that to be true speaks volumes for how Retronyms are perceived here.

I'm really tired of Retronyms hate. Disclaimer: I'm friends with folks from Retronyms. I like them. They're nice people. I'm biased.

I also understand frustration with Retronyms. Retronyms' product plan hasn't always been aligned with my personal wish list. They resisted Audiobus for a long time. However, their justification was that Audiobus was proprietary, and they wanted focus on Apple standards. That bummed me out, too. (To their credit, AU is winning hearts and minds, and if you follow their twitter, Retronyms is clearly interested in addressing AU going forward.)

But holy crap, they aren't friggin' Exxon. They have limited resources. They're pioneers on a new operating system. Look at their ambition. Sure Tabletop had issues, and the single-app model didn't seem to take off, but tabletop is very imaginative, and full featured, and the best vision for a virtual studio app.

Their vintage synth ports are as awesome as Arturia's code enabled them to be. Sure, I would love to see these synths as AUs. Their MIDI issues are part of the legacy code, and would be really difficult to unravel. But they sound great. They're inspiring. And Phase84 is the love-clone of the very popular digits PM synth, which ALWAYS shows up on list of the best VST synths.

Hardware. Hardware. Do you know how difficult, (and expensive) it is to launch hardware? Yet they had a vision for wej and looperverse. As first gen products, these are pretty cool. Keep in mind their market opportunity isn't a jillion users. Most ~established~ hardware companies struggle. One famous berkeley instrument manufacturer I know is out raising money right now. But Retronyms went for it. Did I mention the software works with the hardware?

The AudioCopy store is sort of meh, and a missed opportunity in file management a la Audioshare. But the sample store is the best on iOS. I'm not a sample/loop freak, but it totally fits in with their hook and IMPC strategies. Oh, yeah, I forgot how hard it is to emulate a piece of hardware like the MPC, and expand it's functionality.

Retronyms isn't a massive building filled with limitless resources. They're in a humble office with like 10-ish people. I think they have accomplished a lot. Software is hard. And ambitious software is harder. I understand how Retronyms products aren't a good fit for some people. They have made some decisions that looked weird from the outside.

But for gosh sakes, I think we can appreciate what they're trying to do, and give them a hand up. They are responsive on twitter, and they seem to be in it for the long haul. This is not an adversarial relationship; we are on the same team. We're on a journey, and retronyms deserves patience and encouragement to match their ambition.

    Excellent wholly decent post.

  • New update to AudioCopy out. Guess we can upload to YouTube now

  • Looking at the content store it is saying impc Pro 2 packs so I expect and update to imp pro

  • edited December 2017

    https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/impc-pro-2/id1294928298?mt=8

Payed update. New app is €27,99 but they say iMPC pro users can get a discount by completing a bundle for $15. Can’t seem to find the bundle, though. Maybe it takes some time to show up.

So I think we need a demo for this one.

It was nicely done. Until the last sentence that could have actually been a bona fide press release.

  • Great timing there

This totally made my night. Thank you so much for your kind words, John! We are just like all of you, passionate about making music on iOS. It's really helpful for me to read all of these comments and learn more about what you all are expecting and hoping for in an app. We don't always get things right, but we do try our very best to listen to what you all have to say.

I have to humble brag on Louis and the rest of our team!!! You guys, they've been working countless amounts of hours to get iMPC Pro 2 finished. I am thrilled that we have finally entered the world of AU also... there's so much to learn and explore. This is only the beginning.

Ok. Back to reading all of these great comments and threads. So cool that you are taking the time to even consider things that we have made... it's a very humbling experience for us. Thanks so much for being honest, I appreciate it more than you know! - Taylor

We always love your feedback! It's super helpful to hear and we've definitely taken those thoughtful comments to our team. It helps us grow and learn, and of course we want to connect with you guys about these apps. What's working, what isn't, and what you're hoping for. All of it is great... so thanks! :) - Taylor

  • @johnfromberkeley @stormywaterz @Munibeast Hey guys, sorry for the confusion on the bundle. We pushed the release button a tiny bit early to make sure that iMPC Pro 2 would be available worldwide by tomorrow (we’re in San Francisco). The bundle will be valid as soon as Apple approves it, and we couldn’t submit the bundle until the app was live. I’m so excited for you to try it out :) - Taylor
