For my sins (many) this has been a 'buy and fiddle later' but as is often the way I have not gotten around to that fiddling. When you say versatile what do you mean?

Its filtering and effects options. Also, the ability to switch back and forth while the A and B screens are playing/recording. There are also a TON of quality loops available for a very fair price (20 for 2 bills) that you can audition before buying.
I forgot that you can also load your own files.

  • I have only used Launchpad. How does LoopyTunes compare? I am assuming it's MIDI-friendly but how about other than that?

  • Most of the parameters can be mapped to midi :)
I bought it mainly for the key shift feature , but unfortunately it's monophonic and cannot be mapped yet . But I am sure most people don't use this feature .

Launchpad (the app) is a fun app that integrates really well with their Launchpad hardware.
Looptunes has a lot of similarities (launching loops synchronized to beats), but here are some key differences:
    1. Looptunes support for more midi controllers than just Novation ones, or you can map your own.
    2. Looptunes lets you load a session while you’re playing another one
    3. Looptunes has allows for crossfading or having separate FX for left and right sessions, for a more DJ’esque workflow
    4. speaking of DJ’esque, LooptunesDJ or LooptunesHD + song deck upgrade allows you to play songs synchronized to your beats. (2 song decks + 2 beat grid decks)
    5. Looptunes allows you to layer pads in a vertical slot, so you could have a kick loop, snare loop, HH loop playing all in one slot.
    6. Looptunes has ‘per loop’ editing like filter, lfo, etc.
    7. Looptunes allows you to pitch a loop on the fly
    8. Looptunes sessions load blazingly fast, whereas on Launchpad it takes much longer
    9. Looptunes has an online browser that lets you browse, preview, or purchase loops from a database > 10000 loops. You don’t have to purchase a full sound pack, just the ones you like. The online browsing alone makes it a lot of fun to come up with new ideas.
    10. Looptunes (HD and DJ) has a cue channel which is awesome for live jamming

I may have forgotten some other differences.

You're very welcome. Peter lists a lot of other attributes above.
