I’ve sent the link to Mrs Monzo to study.
In the meantime if anyone can recommend a good all rounder MIDI keyboard controller (Novation Launchkey looks fave so far) I can pass that on to her too.
@MonzoPro See if @SpookyZoo will sell you one of his Novation X-Stations.
....looks up ‘Novation X-Station’ and gets excited by the masses of sliders and levers....
Also has a pretty nice internal stand alone synth and can work as a bi-directional audio and MIDI interface for the iPad. If you search x-station on the forum via google I'm sure you'll find 50 posts of me gushing on and on about it so I'll stop there.
Is it well supported? Reason I’m looking is to replace my perfectly good enough Edirol, that unfortunately has been abandoned driver-wise...
Notebook for passwords. Classic!
Lost me soon after he recommends a book on how to do dance music. What was the title...do this and sound like everyone else doing this. Then came the notebook. Writing stuff down occasionally. Who’d have thunk it.
A Seaboard Block? Trying hard to resist..
Nah I’m after something cheap with knobs on. Nice though.
The Launchkey is good as it works with iPad and Logic, and has pads, knobs and sliders. Unfortunately Maschine seems to only work properly with its own (expensive) controllers, and I use that as the main thing.
All academic anyway as this has to be vetted by the chief (Mrs Monzo), so I may end up with comedy socks.
I have an Akai mpk61 which I'm very happy with. sliders, knobs and a good keyboard.
Haha, there’s actually been some really good deals for X-Stations on UK eBay lately. Fortunately, I’m saving up for an iConnectAUDIO4+, so I’ve managed to resist adding to the collection!
It’s a discontinued product but all the downloads for firmware, manuals and patch librarian are all available online from Novation. It’s the perfect midi controller. As Syrupcore mentioned, it has a decent synth and audio interface too. You can often pick up 25 key versions between £90- £140. 49 and 61 keys are rarer but can be seen for approx, £160/£200 respectively.
Editor still works for me on the latest macOS. You can also program everything on the machine. The entire thing is class compliant so no real worries.
Not sure how it would be with Machine. The thing about this controller vs every other controller out there: the knobs are laid out and labeled like a synthesizer. You map the knob labeled "cutoff", located inside the section labeled "filter" to the target app's filter cutoff. In use, no thinking "what does slider 3 do?" required since muscle memory takes over. LFO rate, amp ADSR, OSC pitch... all labeled, all placed in a logical spot.
The two ADSR sliders and the buttons above them can work for mixer and mutes but if clip launching or other non-synth needs are the main concern, this might not be the right one.
Thanks guys. I’m not really into clip launching so this might tick a lot of boxes, and Novation are a good company.
I’ll do a bit of eBay browsing later
Maschine doesn’t use standard MIDI connectivity for some functions - so you can’t record automation for example. It’s an issue with all non-NI controllers apparently, so I can’t tick that box without spending mountains of cash, which isn’t an option.
Thanks, I’ll check that one out too.
