best app for recording midi?

At the moment I am using Genome to record midi from Soundprism and others, but I find the midi editing a little cumbesrsome, and also the lack of a count in is annoying - I have to set up a drum click every time I record an instrument. I am thinking of Cubasis or possibly BM2, what are people's experiences?

My workflow is to record the midi into the sequencer, and then use the sequenced file to record the synth itself into Multitrack DAW for later use in Auria, on an iPad 2 for now (hopefully an iPad Air soon). My timing is pretty poor so I rely on the sequencer to fix my performance :)

  • There aren't many dedicated piano-roll midi editors on iOS. I've tried Genome and also wasn't able to get into it much. There's also one called Brainwave which has been around for a long time without any updates so I don't know how viable it is. The rest seem to be attached to DAWs and of those, Cubasis has the cleanest/ergonomic setup I think. You can get a full screen edit going by swiping up on the edge, which helps. All the things you would expect of piano roll editing are there, easy to set up loops with the locators, resize and all that. Also you can use it for what you were doing with Multitrack Daw, but from the same program and just save the recording into the Media bay. It all kind of works.

  • @richardyot have you tried NLog PRO?

  • mSequncer is also a fine option.

  • I have Nlog - might give it a go, and I'll check out mSequencer, thanks.

  • I've tried them all, and Cubasis is hands down the easiest and most seamless midi editing I've seen. Cubasis doesn't have midi automation yet, but will within the next two months.

  • I'll 2nd Cubasis for the best solution for the workflow described above. If NanoStudio ever got MIDI Out, it would probably take the top spot for me, as I find it's MIDI editing workflow to be the best on the iOS platform.

  • You may want to consider Symphonix Evolution especially if you want to see the music in traditional musical notation.

  • Nanostudio.

  • OK, so I went ahead I bought Cubasis, but it doesn't really do what I need :(

From what I can tell, you can only record midi with the internal keyboard from Cubasis, and not from other apps such as Soundprism Pro or Geo Synth.

This is a real shame, Genome supports recording from other virtual midi apps, but the interface is cumbersome. Cubasis has a much nicer interface but doesn't seem to support the functionality I am looking for.

  • Works fine for me using Soundprism on an iPad mini. Make sure Soundprism uses Cubasis as a destination and Cubasis is set to Omni or the right midi channel.

  • Thanks for the answer - yes it does work, I hadn't set it up correctly. And first glance this seems a much nicer workflow than using Genome, and I can immediately record the midi sequence back into Cubasis as audio too, so this really helps.

  • Good to hear. Too much of an investment for it not to do what you wanted it for. I like the workflow as well.

  • Hallo' so i got similar problems..
want to record midi from synth apps into Beatmaker2
    or nTrack Pro
    but it works so strange..
also if it records any midi data I need to use the keyboard inside
    The Host.. ;-(
I checked lot of times if I did mistakes on choice of midi Chanel ..
    can't bring this to flow...
does somebody have experiences whith multitrackstudio?
I know it's not on the bus.. but I would go to auria anyway when the synths are recorded..
And is symphonix reliable with v-midi?
    thanks for suggestions.
