OT: Calling Ableton heads — Send & Return madness by Robert Henke...

Very Interesting. It's difficult to make out on the old, low quality video. It seems that the sends are all audio tracks with routing that i'm having difficulty figuring out.Can anyone explain how this is set up? any assistance appreciated!

Comments

  • I think I might have to see if I can replicate jt myself. I wish we had a slightly better quality video so I could see the routing :(

Looks pretty simple actually. The first track is the audio track holding the recording and kick that he triggers. The other eight tracks are send busses with the same stack of effects (tweaked differently) on each. He is just triggering the sound into the fx busses and they are feeding back into themselves to create the long wierd echoes. This is a fun activity.

Oh yeah. I misinterpreted the ops request. I blame sleep deprivation. I assumed he wanted an exact replica not just how to do it. This Is a very good explanation :)

  • This looks like a granular effect, manually built, with separately tweakable FX for each grain :)
The power of Ableton is its flexibility paired with simplicity.

  • @audiorangutan does that mean that there is no return tracks, just sends routing back into each other? if anyone could post a screenshot of a similar routing would be very helpful!
bonus related question: what is the use of sends within return tracks, is this something to do with parallel / serial processing?

    @Artefact2001 checkout Diego Stoccos colorbots:-

its like a more recent version of this kind of processing. i use it all the time and i have my own custom variant of it. i basically converted Diegos template into a vocoder that accepts input from whatever synths i feed into it but it still reacts rhytmically to the input beat layers. its pretty amazing what you can do with ableton. i actually learned how all this works thanks to diegos template and also his tutorials.

another good example abusing convolution reverbs to do magic:-

i actually managed to convert this somewhat to work in Auria Pro but my air2 just isn't powerful enough to get results as easily :/

To use proper Ableton lingo: He has eight “Return Tracks” holding the effects. He then has the “Sends” on those Return Tracks sending to each other in ways that create feedback, like a crazy Space Echo. The juicy bit he gets at the end of the video are from sweeping the Grain Delay. Wish I had Live here on my iPad to send you a screen shot. Would you pretty-please use your superpowers to make an app for us Mr. Henke?

i genuinely wish ableton would come on ios lol. would delete all my other dawish apps in a heartbeat if that's what it cost. funny really. i've gone back to ableton after a long time strictly on Ios and im in love once again :D

just wish i could get into ableton 10's beta already DX

  • @gonekrazy3000 Me too. I’ve been sidetracked in iOS land for many months now just trying to establish a solid workflow. Just thinking about starting a new project in Live gives me tingles, because I know that it “just works”—the opposite of my iOS setups a lot of the time.

Robert released a couple M4L devices called Granulator and Granulator II since then that do this as well.

  • Thanks guys, will try and do this. After learning Ableton over the past year I'm continually impressed by the things you can do with it, so open ended when you factor in MIDI / FX chains and M4L devices. The fact that you can share racks and chains make it even better. It's like the software version of modular synthesis.

Exactly this. Plus 10 is bloody amazing due to it finally getting multiclip editing and a host of other qol improvements.... Just wish I'd get my beta code already :(

BTW, you can set up this kind of FX feedback craziness in AUM with mix buses.

Oh yes. Definitely. But it will melt if you try to do something to the level of crazy as ableton. I'm really looking forward to the octacore iPads so we can finally do some crazy mangling at low latency.

  • @audiorangutan if you get a moment to do that screenshot it will undoubtedly save me about an hour fumbling about! ;)

I’m not near Ableton for a while, so your hour of fumbling may be quicker. Pretty simple though, or check the Ableton forum for quicker help.
