Can it get nasty and funky, or is it just alway soft breezes and happy clouds floating along?

Funky it does not do. There’s a rhythm option for the voice but it’s still super subtle.

But it’s not all happy clouds... it can do dense clouds full of sad rain drops waiting to get free as well.

Yuk / stiff / boring / so totally uninspiring.
I thought I could squeeze something great out of it - Nope.
In over 3 years of purchasing many apps - this is my first refund.
I can't bring myself to writing bland elevator music.

Yes sample import is there but it’s a bit convoluted and put me off. It involves zipping them up into paks. There is a guide somewhere on the website help I think. Hopefully Audioshare and Files support is coming. I did request Audioshare and Link. i will probably buy 2018 if they add these or wait until 2019 etc ;)

Yeah.. I wouldn't trust that too much. None of my older versions of Mixtikl are usable anymore, because you can't read the text in the UI. Reason why besides tempted, i'm not delving into Wotja

For anyone else looking for some quality remorse, you get three days from the free version (and a perfectly workable function-limited version thereafter), which saves the hassle of a refund if you don't find you click with it.

It can actually do quite gnarly things; it's just the built-in templates that skew towards the new-agey. For an instant example of a completely different vibe, install the MDB pak from this page; then tap the gear option at top right in the main screen, tap the Random tab, and bring the Tempo slider up to 160; then go into Templates for Randomization at the top of the screen and turn off everything except the IM_ZG_MorphingDrum+Bass item in italics at the very bottom and, optionally, the WJ4 TTM Players at the top (but then go into this and turn off everything except E-Piano_Vintage, Modulating_Strings, Synth_Fizz, and Synth_Spectral Morph). Then go back to the main screen and Create New => Album (automatic). You may not like this either, but it's definitely not bland elevator music.

Mixtikl 7 (and Noatikl 3) working here too (latest iOS).

I don’t venture in often as I find the UI less than conducive to my workflow. I’d rather fire up Refraktions and get me some instant gratification.

I do admire the ambition of the things though.

  • Must admit that I am tempted by the latest version of Wotja. Tried a couple of the earlier versions of tikl but always hated the UI and the pricing model and abandoning of earlier versions seemed a bit baffling. I had gone to a place where these apps weren't ever going to be on the menu. A shame as I find the underlying concept pretty interesting.

With the latest version of Wotja it seems they have tamed the interface a little. I can play with it all I want before committing (a three minute time limit is no problem for me) and the pricing of the standard offering seems reasonable, five quid for six months.

It seems they have been trying to establish a business model that is sustainable for themselves and customers and they have shown that they intend to stick around. The subscription is fairly low cost and low risk so I'm likely going to give them some money.

Haha, I also get „weird“ results (in Noatikl still, mostly), but I stick to reeeally slow tempos, like 45bpm. Gets you there, too. I must admit, though, I do like simple long waves evolving (which I guess is meant by „boring elevatormusic“)... . I hope these guys sell lots of Wotja, it would be sad to see them stop after 20-something years of this, and their Apps are central to my scapes. Cheers!

You have to put the zipped files in the icloud folder not via itunes and I think they have to be zipped a certain way. It's something they really should address eventually as it's an incredibly difficult workflow. :)

Noatikl 2 and Mixtikl 6 stopped working for me since iOS 10 I think, unless you upgraded to 3 and 7, you get garbled text, the app still functions though you just can't read the text.

Ah, quite right: I only checked on my iOS 9 device. Mixtikl 7 also has the garbled text bug under iOS 10, sadly, but Noatikl 3 is ok. Unrelatedly, there also seems to be an AB bug in the last version of Wotja 2017, which doesn't seem to have been caught in time for the initial 2018 release, though a fix is apparently coming.

I know I've managed to do it without either iTunes or iCloud – possibly through iFunBox or Filza. But you do need something that'll give you directory access. I suppose the hazard with Open In… is that if you let it open any .zip file there's the possibility for unsolicited mayhem (© Terrible Student Bandnames 2018), but it would certainly be nice to have a better option.

    What does this bug?

Introduces a very loud and uninvited electric razor voice when run in AUM or AB2 (I don't have AB3 to see if it's there as well). Not sure whether it manifests the same for everyone, though. I'm not sure which version it broke in; I know it was fine for most of the year, but there were a lot of updates.

    I have Wotja2017, AUM and AB3

    How to test this?

First, check your Wotja 2017 is the final version. Go into the Settings via the gear icon at upper right, and tap the information button at top right; it should say Wotja 4.15.1 (5224).

If that's the case, try AUM first. Create a new channel and load Wotja 2017 as generator. Start it playing if it's not doing so already. You may already hear an unwanted buzzing tone while it's playing, but if you don't, stop the file playing. This is the point at which the buzz starts up on my iOS 10 device; on iOS 9 it's there throughout. The same happens when I load Wotja 2017 in AB2, but for jailbreak reasons I don't have anything running a system later than 10.1.1, so can't run AB3 (except under LowerInstall, which I doubt will work for AB3) or test what happens in iOS 11. If you don't hear the buzz, let me know your iOS version (and Wotja 2017 version if different from the above); it would be a really useful finding that I'll happily pass on to Intermorphic.

Mixtikl 7 is all good on iOS 11
Haven’t tried Wotja 2018 or Mixtikl 7 in AB...

It would be nice if Wotja had Mixtikl’s smooth import option, I looked at the procedure for making zip paks to load into Wotja...it seems a bit arcane in terms of file building and naming but maybe there’s a simpler deal with 2018 iteration that I’m missing

I have the latest version and get crackling in AUM and major distortions in AB3.
I already contacted the developed by mail, as the contact form on the webpage did not work.
    I am on iOS 10.3.3

Super-complicated manual. :( I know generative music can be complicated, but this is a tough one to crack.

Did you ever receive a response from the developer? Even 5 months after your post, the buzzing sound when you press stop in Wotja still occurs in AUM. With the introduction of apeMatrix, I can say it does the same thing there. I also got crackles under some circumstances which I haven’t been able to tie down.

Those aren’t the only problems either. With an app this complicated, when there are glitches, it’s hard to tell if they’re the result of doing something wrong. But I tried to create a new pattern for a voice based on a sample in the manual, and when I assigned it, both the existing pattern and the one I created showed up on the pattern line. That’s the problem, of course. Is that what’s SUPPOSED to happen, or am I misinterpreting how to create a new pattern.

I couldn’t get into understanding Mixtikl and Noatikl either, for many of the same reasons. I’d love to be able to get this to work because I like generative stuff, but I’d rather consider the $10 a bad investment than spend a year trying to figure it out to the detriment of my music.

I do know that Wotja can make some great meditative music, and with the application of the midi to other synths, you could use arps on those to pep things up, I imagine. This might be one of those apps you just have to keep coming back to, and twiddle and make amazing discoveries. It may be that you can’t LEARN IT, it may have to TEACH you.

  • I played around a bit with Wotja in AUM, and there are workarounds for the loud buzz when you press stop. But what I did discover was something interesting. I recorded about 2 minutes of a Wotja mix in AUM with all volumes at default levels (127 in Wotja, 75% in AUM). There were definitely crackles. I turned the volume down in Wotja to about 50%. Still crackles. I already had my buffer rate in AUM set at 1024, so I decided to change it to 512. The crackling got MUCH worse. I’m no expert, but I’m guessing my iPad Pro (pre-2017) can’t handle what Wotja is sending. They were the only things running on my iPad, there’s plenty of memory and I’m running iOS 11.4.

I can’t find a buffer setting in Wotja, only a midi latency setting. I guess if I’m going to use this, I’m going to have to get into a dialog with the developer.

  • Can anyone explain why there are 4 versions of this on the app store? I understand that 2 are monthly fee and 2 are buy once but whats the other difference?

I was confused at first for the same reason, so I made my research, Wotja and Wotja X are the ones free with the monthly fee subscription, Wotja 2018 and Wotja X 2018 are the ones you buy once, they're yours and you get updates for the rest of the year. "Wotja A" and "Wotja X" are almost the same, the first has been developed for years for Apple devices, it will be discontinued the next year, it has minor differences (anything important). The second is a multi-platform version (Apple, Microsoft) that is the successor to version A, which is planned to continue being developed in the future. I just got Wotja X 2018 for Mac and it's great!
