Waves L1 thoughts and questions
Having just bought the Cubasis Waves bundle (which is a bargain at the moment) having researched the L1 I'm not exactly sure how it should be used now days. It was their first maximiser which was succeeded by the L2 and multi-band L3. The L2 was considered better because it included Auto Release Control (ARC) which increases overall clarity and could be pushed further without causing artefacts. But this version of L1 is the updated 25th Anniversary edition which has Auto Release and True Peak limiting added which is nice to have.
We are now told the loudness wars are at an end because the playback systems are now normalising the audio and if you maximise it too much it will sound worse. The recommendation for streaming services is around -12 to -16 LUFS. So how to you determine the limit here, are there any LUFS meters on iOS?

My rule of thumb: sounds good to my ears, it’s goot!
Hi Mark,
Sebastian, our senior product specialist produced a great tutorial, featuring and demonstrating all Cubasis 2.3 features, including the Waves L1, AudioTrack and Q10 plug-ins:

Additionally, Doug from thesoundtestroom came up with another great tutorial, here featuring the Waves L1 in detail:

Hope that helps!
Best,
Lars
Personally I think the L1 is a bit long in the tooth, but it will definitely work if that's the only limiter you have access to and you don't need to do very heavy limiting. I'd still pick it over the default PSP one in Auria for instance, but doesn't hold a candle to say Pro-L in Auria either.
