OT Caution when eating Nando’s in the UK!

I was eating out yesterday in Milton Keynes, queens court, Nando’s with the family and I decided try some of my two year olds sweet potato mash and bit on something hard which turned out to be glass.

I honestly don’t know why I tried my sons food because I’m not a fan of mash or sweet potato but I’m glad that I did.

Anyway I spoke to the manager who got me to fill out an accident report form and some other form that I can’t remember because I was pretty much still in shock, he said that it was more than likely that the glass came from the manufacturer of the sweet potato mash and he will be reporting it to his head office. I feel if it is a third party manufacturer’ fault then the goods in question should be temporarily removed from sale until further investigation.

I’ve also reported the incident to the foods standards agency who passed on the information to Milton Keynes council and have spoken with a council rep this morning who said that the said Nando’s restaurant was recently reviewed and had a score of five which is the highest standard but they will visit the branch today to see what procedures they were taking.

I really do hope that it’s a one off but I would rather the public know and be informed so they have the choice to use caution when dining out!

    Nasty.

Biggest issue for me has been lumps of walnut shell in cakes and salads - I've broken two teeth that way. I now eat very slowly and carefully. Because of this I avoided breaking another tooth this year at a cafe, that had left a small stone in with the mushrooms.

  • Thing is kids can’t tell you whats wrong if glass or foreign objects have been consumed. At least we can identify like yourself with the walnuts what’s in our mouths and if your not eating too fast avoid swallowing or chocking on it.

  • I know this is off-topic, but at risk of being recursively meta-off-topic, it’s worth mentioning that a big cause of internal injury to small children is those silver oxide button cells or lithium coin cells. If they’re swallowed they can cause serious internal burning. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-37410343

  • Thanks @u0421793 I am one of those fathers who look for all possibility of danger in the house so I will be adding this to my list.

  • I get your anger...and rightly so....the important thing is though, even if by chance ( or ESP), you prevented any harm to your little 'un, and that you weren't injured yourself.
Take solace from that and let's hope that both Nando's and the authorities do their job's and make sure this was a 'freak' happening and not something able to happen again.

I once found a collection of sharp bones in a Birds Eye fish finger, the biggest being about an inch long. Cracked the filling of tooth on it. Big bit could’ve choked a child.

Despite examining the evidence and admitting it was their fault, in writing, the company was really bolshie about it when I asked them to pay my dental bill. At the time I could ‘t get an NHS dentist so I was private. Birds eye at first demanded my dental records for three years. Right up until I said I’d had enough of trying to be reasonable with them, and would be speaking to a lawyer shortly. Then, miraculously, a cheque arrived to cover my total bill.

  • @AndyPlankton yes I am taking solace in the fact that injury was avoided but it does not change the fact that it could have been worse

If you experienced this today and someone you know who has a child they sometimes took to Nando’s to eat would you inform them?
