Tera Synth - Wow!

So, i bought Tera synth over Christmas as its on sale. All i can say i am so glad i did! Very high quality sound, very flexible and easy to programme, and AUv3.

If you're not sure because its been out a while i'd definitely recommend giving it a look. Will be in my core synth set now for sure. My only gripe is you can't modulate modulation amounts for things like pan etc in the way you can for LFOs and envs but still....

Does anyone know if Virsyn have plans to update some of their other synths to AUv3? I'd love to pick up Cube but lack of AU lead me to hold fire (but if its as good as Tera i'd really like to ad it to my collection).

Happy xmas all.

Wait. I didn't realize Tera was AUv3! That's like a xmas present from you. Thanks! I'll get you back next year, promise.

Edit: Looks like it happened on Nov 22. Woot! Time to reinstall. Fantastic synthesizer.

  • Tera is one of my favs. Don't forget the Arp - it's great. I often use it to sequence other synths too

  • I got Tera synth for Black Friday mainly because I already owned VoxSyn and wanted to be able to edit the presets. I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the hugeness of the sound that Tera makes. Was not expecting that and was thoroughly impressed. Still slowly working my way through it all...

No probs! So glad the dev put the time in to make this AUv3.

Tera is tops. Been hoping since Tera’s going AUx that microTERA, Cube, Poseidon will follow.

Exactly what i've been thinking since i got it. Definitely looking out for Cube and Poseidon updates from now on.

  • What space does Tera fill that Zeeon, Model15, animoog, poison202, Ripplemaker, Lorentz, etc don't already fill? When do you use it over other synths?

Tera is a modulation tweakers delight ;)

I'm curious about the physical modeling modules in Tera. I wonder if it can to KPS or string synthesis like Laplace or is it physical modeling of filter circuits and such. The analog sounds in the demos are great though.

Are the presets available in the AU GUI for hosts like BM3 that don't have a separate window for presets?

Yeah its a good question. For me i'm just finding it really enjoyable to programme, the modulation options are great, and the oscillators sound really good. The synth itself is semi-modular so you can change the signal path in very interesting ways, and the way its laid out actually makes this much easier than on some other synths i've got.

Really? It would be if it didn’t go totally silent when you’re adjusting anything at all underneath a slider! This makes what appeared to be a superb synth very much a superior to an ARP 2600, to instead be a fairly useless hit-or-miss exercise in key press, open up the controls, adjust one of them a bit while not being able to hear anything, the controls disappear, the key press now works so you can hear the result of the guesswork, then open up the controls and nudge it a bit more – or less, repeat for a while until the futility sets in and you never use it again.

Things may have changed since last you checked, the AUx synth parameters GUI coexists nicely with keys, and sliders etc can be tweaked for immediate real-time twiddling on the keys, one finger on the dial the other on C4 etc...

This in iMPC Pro 2 but also in MTS, AUM

I'm an external controller guy, so while this is a bit frustrating, I don't mind so much.

Nope, just tried it again, still totally stone deaf to a keypress when adjusting any of the controls underneath the sliders.

Yes, I see what you mean now: pop up menus for ADSR, LFO (that open when you tap rectangles under sliders on main GUI) make the keys go silent. Main sliders and dials are tweakable with keys, but with pop ups no dice...I remember noticing this in early times with Tera, didn’t bother me much, but now it will...
    Wrote Harry an email...

  • While a pain, it’s never stopped me making sounds with it - but it’s fair comment.

  • yes, it is annoying, in some cases you can work around this limitation by holding a few keys and having an arp running. does not work for every kind of sound though

  • @Fruitbat1919 said:

Same here. I'd like to see it fixed but its not a deal-breaker for me as all the parameters can be accessed on the mod page, and keys pressed at the same time from there.

But, yeah i could see why it would be annoying if you really wanted to make use of the pop-up window (and of course you should be able to as its a feature of the synth).

  • Ok idiot alert here. How the heck do I turn off the internal sound when I want to use the arp on other synths. Can’t figure it out?

    Huh?

    AU3

    What the fuck.

I saved over the init patch with volume set to 0 - just load that up when you want to arp other apps.

Ok that’s what I was ending up doing. Thought there would be a disable internal sounds or something.

    Thanks!

Haven’t heard back from Harry but if you hold your finger on a note before you open the pop-up you can hear what your tweaks are doing inside the pop-up. Doesn’t work with notes that lack sustain...

  • edited December 2017

I think it's 'host related' too when I host Tera AUv3 in BM3 I can use it's on-screen keyboard as normal while tweaking every area of the Tera AUv3?! (ie. even the modulation boxes which cut out the keyboard when using the stand-alone app).

with those, just turn on the arp

When using it in BM3, do you notice that BM3 starts to lag and CPU usage becomes high? Every time I use Tera it nearly crashes

I'm hitting ~15% CPU with Tera AUv3 on my Air 2, iOS11.2.1. UI feels responsive without lag.
Buffer is set to 256, Samplerate 44.1Khz
