Archtop Jazz guitar

Is there an iOS app with this sound? I know that I can get VIs for my desktop.

  • Garage band guitar is the only one I can think of. Works pretty well for a virtual instrument.

Is there a jazz guitar in GarageBand?

  • iFretless Guitar has the best hollowbody guitar I know on iOS; I also like the jazz guitar in SoundCanvas. The SampleTank hollowbody is also worth checking out.

  • Or you can build a kind of Jazz guitar with Geoshred

  • if you're not a guitar player you can fake it pretty well with a modified FM epiano sound.
Short attack, reduced decay, sustain and release. Velocity/Mod-Wheel to add some grit.
These guitars don't have as much wood resonance/overtones as a typical steel steel string. Frequency response by a clean/low crunch guitar amp sim.
For a guitar player it's hardly convincing, though - but regular listeners don't really notice the difference.

  • There are also various soundfont versions out there. Jazz Guitar is of course a standard GM patch, so any MIDI player with a GM soundset (such as bs-16i) will have some version of it.

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. I’m still searching for that traditional archtop blues lounge band sound. Something that sounds like the Orange Tree archtop

I tried soundfonts and iFretless, but nothing provides this classic sound. I will try Geoshred and the FM piano idea.

    Thanks!

That is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, and if I had $179 I'd be all over it. There's definitely nothing even fit to wipe the feet of that in iOS. Wow.

As I can recall, the Jazz Guitar patch in Korg Module Tritonpack is really nice...

I think SampleTank has the closest match. Just after Audiobus was first released, I used it in GarageBand on this track. If I can get it to post. Okay, I can’t! Anyone know how I can attach a file from AudioShare or Mastering?

It's not bad if what you want is an EP trying to sound like a jazz guitar, but it's completely unguitarlike. I forgot to mention iFretless is the only one (outside GeoShred) that's MPE-compliant, though it can be a bit fussy and the transition between different samples isn't always terribly smooth.

    Another vote for the SampleTank.
There are also some decent soundfonts floating around the web.

  • @iansainsbury Thanks!. I think that Sampletank sounds the best. I'm guessing that this is the Hollowbody guitar in the Electric Guitar pro pack? I can spring for $2.99.

  • As far as memory serves, @scarletjerry , that was the one, yes. I’m sure a decent reverb will help, but it’ll never sound quite like that VST, and it’ll certainly never sound like an ES-150!

righty, right - the reverb in the final part of the track works great, but the clean parts reveal the difference to a real guitar perfectly. The key tracking simple cuts the smoothness a player would apply - a natural matter of facts with keyboards.
There used to be sample sets (back from the Akai days) that compensated this with a bunch of carefully programmed articulation layers, but to 'learn' those was allmost as much effort as learning to play the guitar o:)
nice and mellow song btw B)

There is an arch top hollow body electric but I think they intended it as a 60s tangy Shadows type rather than your typical jazz sound.

  • Besides the Orange Tree Archtop (which I have and agree is fantastic), another great Kontakt jazz guitar is the Impact Soundworks Archtop: Hollowbody Electric Guitar. Usually $129, it's on sale (till tomorrow) for $89 here:

I bought it last summer and so far have made a couple of tracks with it (note: I don't work in anyway for Impact Soundworks).

    Lovely. Worthy of Etzwane himself.

My absolute all-time favourite writer. I noted your forum handle ages ago, but the Ifness brand was what gave you away as a hardcore fan…
