The new-ish iPad 9.7 2017
So I was thinking about upgrading. My old iPad mini has become in bearably slow.
Is this 2017, 9.7 iPad. Not sure what it’s called. It’s the one that starts at $329.
How is it ?
Thanx
Comments
Its great for sure. But I‘d go for the 12.9.
The pro?
I don’t even know what my current iPad is. It’s a mini. I’ve had it for years. Maybe a mini 4?
I just recently bought a brand new 2017 15 inch MacBook Pro. It was ridiculously expensive. Now I feel like I need a new iPad.
The 2017 iPad is a solid, fast machine. But if your current mini is a Mini 4, then the difference is not that big, as the Mini 4 (like the comparable Air 2) is still a really capable iPad. If your current Mini feels slow, I’m fairly certain it’s not a Mini 4.
I had an Air1 and a Mini2, which felt more or less the same performance wise. I got the 128gig 2017 ipad (ipad 5th gen I think they call it) and woohooo! What an amazing deal for me. The performance increase was fantastic.
I still have my Mini2 but my daughter now uses it for SumDog
I replaced it with a 128Gb 2017 iPad same as AudioGus and also find it very snappy not to mention the storage which should last quite a while (even after all the recent sales).
I agree. The difference between an A8 and an A9 processor isn't very big. Additionally you have to consider that most apps just dont need maximum CPU speed (or only for a very short period).
Geekbench: (Single Core / Multi Core / Metal)
A8 (for iPad Mini 4): (1659 / 2834 / 4836)
A9 (for iPad 2017): (2523 / 4377 / 10208)
See here: https://browser.geekbench.com/ios-benchmarks
I would say the most important benchmark here is the single Core benchmark. A difference of 50 percent does not mean very much, if you ask me. They share the same pixel count (2048×1536 vs 2,048 × 1,536) - and the display quality of the iPad Mini 4 is a bit better (less reflections).
Both devices have 2 GB RAM (LPDDR3 vs LPDDR4). On the other hand the 2017-model is a bit bigger (i think this is very useful for a lot of people), and has a bigger battery (8,827 mAh vs 5,124 mAh), which usually does result in a better battery life (about 20 percent) and longer running times (about 10-15 percent).
I’m still
Upgrading regardless as my old mini is only 16 gb. Which is just way too small for anything.
I’ve really gotten into iOS music making. So many amazing apps. I’ve been loving auxie studio and o course Gadget.
Maybe I’ll get a iPad Pro. I was just wondering about the 2017 9.7. The price seemed a bit too good to be true.
For the money get the 2017 iPad, I’ve got the 12.9 pro and I just got the 2017 iPad.
There is NO noticeable difference in performance. Forget the pro. I wish I had.
Sure the bigger screen is nice but so what. The pro is a grand and the iPad is 339,
I wish someone had told me..
By the way the da converters on my o;d iPad 2 sound better than both the newer models, so that’s what I use most of all for basic editing of samples. You don’t need a pro.
If much of your workflow happens in AUM the extra resolution of the 12.9” (not just the size itself) is a huge plus, as you can have more AU windows open and navigate them conveniently.
Thanks for this thread!
I find the DA converter in my Air1 and mini2 are not as good as the 2017 iPad. I do have an ipad2 laying around, curious to see how it sounds.
My 2017 9.7 works pretty damn great. Never had any of the issues I hear about with the larger Pro iPad.
I guess it’s a personal thing on the da’s, but I will often just have my old ipad2 in the studio ,and Dropbox a sample over to it to compare. 9 times out of ten il run a mini jack from it straight to the desk and bypass my permanent iPad pro set up which has its own usb route. Simply because I like the warmth from the headphone jack over the supposed extra clarity from the usb audio from the pro.
Things can be too clean and characterless sometimes. IMHO.
Surely, thats just your desk adding the warmth?
Purchased a a new 9.7" IPAD for my son to start music and for the price to performance ratio it cannot be beat. I actually got mine on sale Black Friday for a low $249. If you want to do much mixing or sample based music, the regular IPAD will still perform, however you have a little more gpu with the Pro. If I could buy over again, I would still have purchased the regular latest generation IPAD VS Pro. Works great!
No cos both pads are routed into my system, the iPad Pro through its own novation audio hub via usb and high quality trs into the main studio .
The little ipad2 just on any random channel with a spare mini jack to stereo.
The old iPad sounds Great.
Anyway
Happy new year
Cool. I was so close to buying the 9.7 right before Christmas but didn’t do it. Now I kinda wish I would have. I just checked my old iPad. It’s a mini 2. It’s definitly getting pretty sluggish.
I think I’ll pick up the 9.7 and definitely get at least 64 gb.
I do most of my music making on laptop. I use Live 9, Maschine, Komplete , serum etc. But there is just something I love about making music on the iPad.
I ess heavy into it for awhile but haven’t done much on the iPad in the past year. I still
Have a ton of apps that I bought years ago.
I’ve seen references to au. What’s the story with au on iPad? Are we able to run plug ins on the iPad now? Also, back when I was real into it Samplr was huge as was patterning and sector. Are those apps still ring updated and what are some other newer ones I should grab. ?
i have the 12.9 pro and the regular 9.7 that came out last year. both are great. if you can get the 12.9—it is phenomenal.
Try in the store to see which is best for you. I have had all sizes of iPads but 12.9 is the magical one. AU plugins has a lot of momentum right now. Make sure any instruments you invest in support AU ‘today’. If it doesn’t by now it probably never will. Choice of DAW/host will be extremely subjective but I’m bullish on GarageBand and AUM.
12.9 seemed nice on a table but too big for using while walking around or laying down.
Walking around 12.9 is bad (9.7 seems best for this though 10.5 is almost as good)
Laying down 12.9 is truly fabulous.
7.9 very very good for walking around too.
I look gooseneck stands for hands free.
Love my mini!
I got the 2017 9.7 at launch basically and am still loving it. I use it live on stage.
