Split pads and keys on midi controller

I have been reading the other threads regarding this question but am still haven’t found a solution, so I thought I would ask for help!

Is it possible on a midi keyboard that has drum pads to split the keyboard/pads between two apps? I see apps like midiflow and imidibridge and am not sure if these would work with assigning pads to apps. I have an m-audio axiom mini 32 and it would be great to have the pads trigger samples, for example, while they keys play a synth app.

Or: since the m-audio is still exchangeable, would something like the Novation launchkey mini work? I can’t find any info about it controlling the launchpad app and a synth other than the launchkey app. I’d actually prefer to use the Launchpad app but don’t want to be limited to launchkey on the synth. And also just curious if there is a midi assignable control to launch a scene/row?

Thanks for your help, and Happy New Year everyone!

If you can set different midi channels for the pads and keys, then this would be possible, by routing the different channels to different apps, via the apps you mention and others.

  • Midiflow (still on sale at $3.99) will let you map particular note values or ranges to a different channel (and then remap them to particular pitches). I use it particularly to map the bridge triggers on Artiphon to a different instrument. You can map more or less anything to anything in it, so however the pads are triggering their sounds you should be able to capture and remap it.

  • Akai MPK mini allows you to assign pads and knobs to separate midi channels. I think pads and keyboard can be on one and knobs on another.

I think Korg nanokontrol series let's you select a midi channel per individual control but I'm not absolutely certain.

  • Ah just realised you want pads and keys working separately.

In that case you can simply program your controller to send CC messages via the pads so they don't trigger notes on your synth.

  • Thanks for your help folks, i think this may be too complicated in the end!

A lot of MIDI routing can seem very complicated, but it gets easier as you use it more and more. Don’t give up! I’m still learning things all the time about routing this and that. If you haven’t already, familiarize yourself with MIDI terminology like studying for a test, and things will get easier as you tinker with your gear.

About using a Launchkey to control Launchpad AND other synths...Jakob Haq did a great video about this exact thing.

    Hope this helps...

  • You can definitely do this with MIDIFlow no matter the controller.

I've never used an axiom but if there's a way to program it on board or via a desktop application, setting the keys to one midi channel and the pads to another as someone mentioned above is usually the easiest way. Then you can set up a simple channel filter in AB or MIDIFlow to send them to different places or set the two target apps to the correct midi channels.

  • @Scottzilla82 thanks for the video link! That was helpful. The axiom has one midi channel for both pads and keys which seems pointless. A Novation keyboard might be better since ultimately I would like to use launchpad anyway, although I wonder if the mini has the same thing where the pads will work with the launchpad app only if it’s in the focus.

  • Thanks @syrupcore and hi by the way! It’s been ages. I don’t know if there’s a way to program it via a desktop app (at least I haven’t found one) and most of my internet searches have only turned up other users being disappointed with the pads and keys both being on one channel.

  • Hi. Sounds like a pain. This software might work. There's a windows version out there too somewhere http://m-audio.com/support/download/software/enigma-v1.2.2

Should at least tell you if it's possible to have separate channels.

I know you can absolutely do this on The Axiom Pro but I am not sure about other models. I have to assume so.
