Connecting things to Lightning port
I am looking at the 'Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter' in the Apple store. For a company that prides itself on design, its marketing blurbs seem particularly opaque so I need to make sure this will do what I need. I think it may work as a splitter that allows me to connect two USB devices at the same time, one directly and one using the regular (and also confusingly-named) 'Lightning to USB Camera Adapter', which appears to be the thing I already have (and which apparently used to be called the 'Camera Connection Kit').
I am also presuming the USB connector on the dongle is a USB 3.0 A-type, which will work with USB-A connectors from regular USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 devices such as my Blue Yeti mic. Have I got all this right?
It also appears from the blurb that there is some way of powering this with a 'USB Power Adapter'. Can I assume this means the regular iPad power adapter, which I would plug into the Lightning port on the dongle? (In other words, not some unspecified kind of third-party power supply that plugs into the USB port.) I have the 29W USB-C quick charger.
And finally, it seems to say I could connect a USB hub to this and run multiple USB devices at once (you know, like an actual bus). I am hoping this means I could connect more than one MIDI device and the charger at the same time.
I am sure someone is doing all this, so advice would be welcome.
At least it doesn't seem to need iTunes

Short answer: yes it all works.
Long answer... well, it’s too long to bother explaining. This guy Jacob has tons of helpful videos on this topic: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZFPiLpzd4cKOsBS9CIu3xg/search?query=Usb
Especially this one.
I recommend getting an powered usb hub if you need a hub for your setup. The power that goes in through the dongle only powers the ipad itself, and some usb devices require too much power for ipad to supply. Some products are in the gray area where the ipad has barely enough power to supply when also connected to the usb3 dongle with power source, but cant supply enough power when the ipad doesent receive extra power though the dongle.
Okay, thanks. I'll add a few of those to my 'watch later'
Yes, that seems sensible. My iPad Mini couldn't power the Blue mic (or wouldn't, as it started working after one of the iOS updates).
Actually, no it doesn't. Plugging the old CCK (a.k.a. Lightning to USB Camera Adapter) into the Lightning port it says 'Accessory Not Supported'. So it looks like you need a USB hub to use more than one USB device and the Lightning port on the new dongle is just for charging.
Sigh. Another £39 for something that should be free in the box of the most expensive iPad known to mankind
Here is the solution for a great price.
Best purchase I made making iOS music to date.
Hmm, I meant that “yes it all works” when you have the right equipment. Sorry my short reply was not very clear. I thought the YouTube links would clarify.
In defense of Apple, they don’t include any dongles with a $3000 MacBook Pro... so I don’t think we can expect them to give us a USB to lightning cable and powered usb hub “free in the box” for music making when we buy iPads. I guess I wouldn’t complain if they did, but nope not happening.
To clarify further:

I didn't get any with my $2200 MacBook Pro 2 months ago when I bought either.................
I did get a less USB ports.
From my experience using the CCK, I have power running to it with an unpowered USB 3.0 4 Port USB hub. I have my interface, and 2 usb keyboards plugged into it and it works fine for me. The iPad does lose power but it’s very slow. (I wonder if quick charging is supported with the adapter)
One thing to keep in mind. With a hub, you can connect multiple midi devices, but only one audio device at a time. Sad, but true. If you need to connect more than one audio source at a time then you need a single device capable of handling multiple inputs.
Well the true rule is 1 input 1 output (as core audio device) so if you plug something only with inputs or only with outputs it seems to get both. The moment you plug something with both includded it overrides the other so that’s “one audio interface mantra” but people are using usb mics with usb only output interfaces afaik.
Not trying to be pedant, just I leanrt that and try to share the knwoledge
This is actually something I did not know, so thanks
That was my motivation at all. Help others alongside continue learning from them.
Cheers!
Interesting! I wish I had something I could try that out with. Thanks for sharing.
Not it all, mate!
Maybe someday iOS will add “aggregated devices” like macOS...
That's hardly a defence
Of course the real solution would have been to put a bunch of USB ports on the iPad in the first place.
