What is best option for combining the audio of multiple devices?
I have two ipads- I am looking for options for conveniently combining their output through a pair of speakers. I know there are several ways of doing this - but which would you recommend? Thanks
Comments
Is a PC or laptop out of the question?
(if best means cheapest) you could combine the headphone outs with a simple 2 into 1 cable/adapter
Combining inputs with a cable adapter is generally bad practice, they should be used for splitting only. Seconding the recommendation for a small mixer. If all you need is the two iPads you can get a Behringer 502 for $40. I have one and it’s decent for the price.
Hi thanks- yes PC/ laptop would be out of the question- I'm looking for something small. I had thought about Bluetooth- but the latency rules it out. A mixing desk sounds like a good idea- but again- a bit on the large side I think. The behringer looks good- could be a good option.
What are others using when they are jamming separate devices with link?
Yup, he totally needs a Circuit.
LOL
Macbook not making the starting line up these days.
Not often.
Hi- thanks- I have actually got one of these- if it's the Behringer one with effects. I used to use it to combine a variety of Korg and Roland grooveboxes with. They have all gone now (apart from one)- all else that is left is the mini mixer and a massive box of assorted cables, jacks and adaptors. I just thought there might be something a bit more.. eh... nimble and diminutive- which I could carry about in my pocket.
Ps - good luck with the escape attempt- a little bit every day- and you could be out around this time next year
There is:
Also the edirol m10mx

Behringer Micromix MX400? Costs 20 quid.
Ah right- I should maybe have mentioned that I was hoping to preserve the stereo output along with it- I was hoping for something like two (or three) mini jacks (or four/six phono plugs) in- and a stereo out- a space for some small batteries to keep ticking over- and maybe a little green led to tell you it’s on. Would WellingtonCress’s idea about the cable adapter be so bad- what are the pitfalls of this (I’m sure I have also heard in the past that it’s not recommended- but I don’t know why)
Found what I was looking for. Pill box passive mixer. Two stereo mini jacks in and one out.

An op-amp based summing mixer will be fine.
…you get the idea.
When I started using iOS for live work (originally an iPad3 and two iPods, now a 12.9 Pro and iPad Air) I found that they all could benefit from a bit of boost, and yeah how to mix them together. I looked around and found this gem:
4 stereo inputs (both 1/4" and 1/8") and one output (also 1/4" and 1/8"). Powered by A/C or
9-volt battery. It's tiny, portable, and perfect for what I need.
Best option ?
Have anyone tryed soundcraft notepad-12fx? https://www.soundcraft.com/en/products/notepad-12fx
I wonder if it is better than a small Behringer.
I was going to mention Korg Volca Mix, I would think would be the best way to go, rather than a passive pillbox. But it only has 2 mono inputs and one stereo. If you were running basslines and drums into the mono, it wouldn't be a problem. Then you would have a third channel for stereo in.
For my ipad and iphone i have 2 cabes that are 3.5 stereo to 2 mono 1/4 inch. Those go into the Behringer minimix. Then i have a volume for all 4 lines. Fairly inexpensive. Link to a similar cable. thttps://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ZKM3SHK/ref=psdcmw_3224439011_t1_B012YH9V24
I’ve just buyed a Behringer UCA222 for using my laptop Ableton Live and iPhone apps together with Link. This audio interface has a direct monitor switch which allow to listen to one device without any latency, which is a huge bonus at this price and the reason I buyed it. With CCK3 if you have one, it will works also as an usb audio interface for your iPad, and you will monitor the second idevice with a jack/rca wire. Note that the headphones output is 50 ohms high impedance, it works well with my 32 ohms HP on usb laptop, but get distortion and imbalance on usb CCK3. But if you plan on using it only with speakers there will be no issues, or if you use more than 50 ohms headphones too.
Ultra cheap and ultra compact.

I use a 802 mixer
+
Novation AudioHub
+
USB/3.5 mm audio in converter adapter (not used much)
Using 2 IPads(1 iPhone as controller), MACBOOK(Ableton), Novation Circuit, 2 Pocket Operators.
I am happy for now.
I can see a need to bump up with next hardware purchase. Several ideas swirling.
Although I may just get another Novation Audiohub which may be simplest approach.
