Apefilter vs Filterstation 2 vs other

I need some more complex filter options/characters other than those found in BM3 stock options.

Anyone versed in both of these AU and can chime in?

I won't be using standalone very often so AU version being as little crippled as possible is important.

What are people seeing as pros/cons on these two?

Sound? Modulation? AU preset handling? Etc.

Thanks!

  • havent done much with complex filtering yet, however Filterstation2 is the first one that makes me want to dig in. This is 100 percent based on GUI

    Filtatron.....but no AU..... :(

  • blastoft f16 filter is fun too.and Wow 2 filters however, right now filterstation2 is making me happy. it’s very similar to fabfilter’s simplon filter which i love

  • ApeFilter can easily get ear-bleedingly extreme and can be quite complex. Filterstation2 covers similar territory, but is less extreme and easier to use for me. Filtatron is terrific, but no multiple filters and, as pointed out, no AU, so not automatible and no multiple instances in AUM. I have them all and use them all, but probably use ApeFilter and Filterstation2 more. But Filtatron does have “that sound” which the others can also get, but may be more difficult to achieve. Filtatron is also somewhat futzy as the UI could use an update.

  • I just want Filtatron to get the Filterstation2 UI :)

  • I like filtatron but found that it colours the sound at 0 setting, it loses some high end. This is not the case with dubfilter and Filterstation afaik.

Thanks all for feedback. Yeah I've been hoping filtration goes AU ever since I got it :/ Spoke to moog and they said maybe early 2018...

Probably grab Filterstation2 and see how it goes. Possibly Apefilter later if I feel like I'm still missing things I need.
    Cheers!

Let me know how you get on, I've been chewing this one over too. If it had automation via AUM I'd be all over it like a randy dog.

Yeah, will get back with initial impressions if I grab it :)

Bit concerned by your post tho. I dont use AUM so I don't know it's limitations or whether they're unique to AUM... can anyone confirm that Filterstation2 automation is possible in BM3 same as other AuFX? Cheers

I'm sure I read somewhere on here it's possible via BM3, worth checking though.

  • Initial impressions are that ApeFilter has more options but Filterstation2 has an easier touch interface.

  • +1

I can get some good sound out of apeFilter but it’s not so quick and intuitive. Don’t have Filterstation yet but may get for apparent ease of use.

  • FuxEQ by mattoncino software is another AU EQ worthy of consideration along with zMors EQ if you’re looking for more traditional eq apps..

  • Blamsoft's F-16 Filter is also quite good.
    AU as well.

  • Thanks for heads up on these alts :)

Not AU, but Moebius Lab has some decent filters.

  • No one mentioned DubFilter - another Amazing app ;)

  • apefilter not work as auv3

TB DualVCF has two independent, very flexible filters plus custom drawable, beat synced curves for modulating center frequency and resonance/steepness independently. It has mostly superseded AD Filterstation 2 for me.

If you want to get more crazy than that (including apeFilter style filters), my recommendation would be Drambo. Need help? We have a quite a number of Drambo experts here 😊

  • Been getting crackles and crashes in Filterstation2 on iPhone iOS 14.2 in both audiobus and AUM (don’t have BM3). Polyvoks and FD-1 worth a look. Love Filtatron but not always stable.

  • TB DualVCF is the best one.

by @supadom is really cool for filter effects.

  • Be careful with ape filter. It is one of those apps that can destroy your ears and your headphones. Panstation by audio damage is another.

  • I like Stereo Filter by Kai Aras, also, though compared to the others I do find it a bit twitchy.

TB DualVCF has the most useful features for me, however I don't LOVE the sound of the filters... I had to work harder than I wanted to in order to get it to really "quack" at me.

apeFilter is excellent, however it's an apeSoft app so it's as far from a traditional filter as you can get. Be warned.

I never really got on with Filterstation - I knew the features were in there, but it just didn't resonate (RESONATE - HA!) with me like the others.
