The potential of SNAP Drum Machine

I recently posted this in another thread, it got no response so I figured I’d start a new one...

I have been waiting for a new kind of drum/percussion app to come out, that has awesome multiple people live jam potential. I just can’t seem to get enough drums especially apps that my drummer can use to compliment the jam on another iPad. Some may not agree with this statement...but I think SNAP Drum Machine by Reactable has the potential to be one of the best live playable drum apps on iOS. It doesn’t seem like it’s getting a lot of attention. Even though it has a midi IAP, some features and upgrades could really change this app. It’s just "not there" yet...

The ability to record a drum pattern for different set lengths produced by it’s "magnet" feature.
More pattern slots
16 drum parts
Effect racks and more control per part
Beat repeater/Rolls/XY per part
Maybe make each drum part have controls like the DrumJams app playable surface (bedlam, pitch, delay, etc) and be able to switch between the regular mode effecting the sequence...the effects/control/pad mode... and magnet mode per part

I love the idea of its playable layout, but it does have one major flaw.... And that is since iOS 11 we have the ability to swipe up from the bottom to reveal the appdock which gets activated when really jamming with it if you’re not careful. The UI/colors I’m not a big fan of, but it appears they made the app to be to be used with the Maschine Jam midi controller, which judging by App Store comments does not work. It makes me wonder if they’ve abandoned this app. Some might not agree but I think it has so much potential in my opinion. Because I’m not a developer I don’t know if these feature requests are even possible, but it would be great! I searched for a @ tag for Reactable Systems, but could not find one to tag them in this post. Anyone know?

Thoughts?

    Need to play with it.

I did notice in the About that they credit this Dark Arps guy for the Hang Drum samples. It turns out you can download them with no restrictions here: http://www.darkarps.com/hang-drum-multisampled-instrument/

He’s also recorded the NASA sounds of the planets transmissions which is very cool: http://darkarps.com/media/audio/Celestial/Celestial_Bodies.zip

Chrome on the iPad couldn’t download them so I used the browser in the Documents app then opened in AudioShare.

    Right, back to the topic!

  • I have Snap, but haven’t used it much. It seem a bit limited in its current form. It definitely has potential though, if Reactable can give it some attention.

I do want to pick up on one of the points you made regarding activating the dock when using Snap and just about any synth app with a keyboard at the bottom of the screen, especially the expressive keyboard in Animoog. Why don’t Apple give us the option of turning this feature off in Settings?! It’s very annoying.

  • How do you change the MIDI out notes to map to another drum machine?

    Progress? ;)

  • Some great new features on the way, really expands the possibilities!
I don't know if I'm allowed to say more...

That's good news. Lots of potential with this app.

  • Cool. Can’t wait to see what is coming. Fun app for sure.

  • Good. Will look forward to the update.
