I'm confused, I think...,

Audiobus vs AUM. Are they the same only with the only difference being the companies that make them? If iam indeed confused what are the pros and cons....I did search the forum but could not find a detailed comparison and know that you guys are indeed so helpful, I knew I could count on you guys

  • You probably could use both. They seem very similar, but they support different apps. Some apps need IAA only, some need Audiobus only. AUM has internal busses and AU Midi support. Audibus connects to other apps better, meaning many apps need Audiobus to feed into their input slot from the Audiobus output slot. AUM seems to only support output to IAA hosts, which Audiobus is one of and can connect output from AUM to the input of Audiobus, then from there to an Audiobus output compatible app. And having both can help with saving a setup to reuse later.

If you only have one or the other, you will run into situations where you cannot hook up your apps as you would like. If you have both and are creative with routing, you can manage nearly any scenario getting apps to work together.

  • What are are busses and how. Do they work with these apps?

  • I read your reply but maybe it's because I'm new at all his ipad thing but it just made no sense to me, this is new to me and lot of stuff just seems so confusing to me

Busses are a way to submix. You route a track (or many) in AUM to one of it's internal busses and can do a separate mixdown to a single track to add FX or whatever. It opens up a lot of possibilities, and is non-existent in most apps right now so AUM is needed that much more.
Another way to look at it is that busses allow you to split a track to multiple destinations. Without busses, you only output to the track output, which usually just goes to the system output (speakers, etc.).

  • The sad truth is that I rarely (if ever) use AudioBus any more. AUM however, I use all the time.

  • Well, there are basically 3 ways to connect apps in IOS: IAA, Audioubus, and AU. IAA is native to IOS and is the method used by AUM. Audiobus is it's own thing, so app developers need to add the Audiobus code to make their apps Audiobus compatible. AU is also native to IOS, is the latest tech, and is supported by AUM and Audiobus.
Various apps will support one, two, or all three methods. You have to look at each app when you are shopping around to find out which method they support. If they support none of these, then you won't be able to connect these to other apps.
This is regarding audio connections between apps. Midi is different, and sometimes you don't need anything extra to connect apps through Midi, but Audiobus and AUM both support Midi connections as well.

  • I use both together everyday

Questions like this are best answered by doing some research on your own so you really get your own understanding of it for your particular use.

None of us may have relevant work flows as you.

    IMHO

You really may want to get some 101 info on your own, watch some early soundtestroom videos on youtube, and go to all the discchord.com old videos from Tim Web.

The things you are asking about are music daw related production mixing questions that are really big issues to learn in a thread.

Your desire to learn will make your own research more valuable.

After you have a working premise on some of these things come and get clarification.

Asking what are busses type things indicates you should do some leg work on your own first before asking.

    It will be worth it.

  • Busses are studios for iPhone musicians. Trains, too. ;)

nice attitude. like RTFM. guy didn't ask about busses til they were mentioned.

A bus just moves instructions and data around the ios system
personally, i don't use audiobus or aum. if you're short of cash and have a daw like cubasis or bm3 then i'd just stick with those. if you use mainly non AU, then i think audiobus would be worth getting cos its the only one which supports preset saving i think
any other question, just ask. i don't use them, so im not 100% tho.

...and planes. Those pesky long hauls. I'm kind of glad I'm not too keen on flying. Carbon footprint is my cover story.
