Group the Loop session start for live performance

Hi - I posted this on the group the Loop forum but no answers yet and was just wondering if any GTL users here can help? (I have a rehearsal in a couple of hours!)

I want to use group the Loop in a live setting with other musicians, and am having issues with the start point of the session. With Cue off, starting the whole session hardly ever starts at the beginning of the Loop (it seems quite random where it starts!). With Cue on, I don’t have a click or count-in to know when it starts. I can put the metronome on but then have to shut it off again, and I don’t want to add extra things to turn on or off, and I don’t really want Cue on anyway. Is there a way to get the loops in a group to start at the beginning of the loops with Cue off?

thank you!

  • The way I use cue is to turn cue on then go to settings and scroll the list on the left to "General" then go to metronome and set it to Count in only. Then when you record a loop you will get click for count in only and makes it easier to record perfect loops.

  • @hacked_to_pieces Thank you, I do use Cue for recording but I am referring to a count-in for loops already recorded - how to count in 3 musicians and Group the Loop so we can all start together? I think it may be a bug of some kind. I don’t know why hitting play starts the loops at a random point nearly every time, instead of at the beginning!

@girlvsworld I think you may have abelton link enabled. I’m just guessing that gtl is waiting for the beginning of a bar before it starts. And the beginning of a bar depends on the master. Just a guess though

  • @fattigman thank you! That’s resolved the issue. Although I do wish I could have link enabled also, and just have the loops start from the beginning!

  • maybe if you run gtl from aum you will see when the loop starts then you can have link enabled too. But then you have to start from aum and then switch to gtl.

If you have Link enabled... to what?

Or groovebox of some kind or dj app or whatever which hits start to follow and tempo control. Explain a bit more your workflow, we aren’t fortunetellers :bawling:

  • @Dubbylabby GTL & Model 15 with arpeggiator. Nothing too complicated. GTL has drums (and other noise) loops and I want to count in the band like I’m the drummer, hit the big start button and have the loops start at the beginning, rather than on the second or third or fourth beat of a bar.

LINK uses an internal timer that will always control the position inside the current bar. The only instance that can change its position is another LINK member, that's the idea behind It.
Have you tried controlling GTL with MIDI notes or CC?
See Settings > MIDI > Global + Play or something like that.

Midi clock or link 2.0 when it comes implemented. Also an external groovebox could be helpful since clock in IOS has latency issues due inherent build of the system itself.

  • Thanks guys. I’m just going to have to add a count-in in group 1 and start the song in Group 2!

  • @rs2000 yes, I am trying to start it from a midi controller but I set it to play and not to Global play so I will see if that makes a difference!

Well that's a smart and easy solution
