Inter-App Audio Buffer Size

I am still on iOS 6 and have never used inter-app audio yet, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. When using Audiobus you can select between the 256 or 512 buffer settings. How does inter-app audio handle buffer settings? Can it be manually selected? Or is it based on the default buffer setting of the first opened audio app?

The question behind the question here is that I am wondering if it would be possible to get buffer settings lower than 256 for live use with one of the new A7 iPads by using inter-app audio.

  • in IAA the buffer depends of the Host App….if you use Auria have the buffer in Auria's settings.

Auria has a 128 setting, but will all IAA compatible apps run stable at this setting? For example, currently the lowest latency setting for Sampletank is 186 (using this as an example in anticipation for when it gets the IAA update). So when devs make their apps IAA compatible, this includes prepping their apps to run at these lower buffer settings?

The reason I am a bit skeptical is that I once asked if it was possible to add a 128 setting in Audiobus and I believe it was Seb who stated that all Audiobus compatible apps would then have to update their apps to be compatible with it. Or maybe IAA is different and this isn't the case?

  • It's definitely the case that any app has to support a buffer size set by whichever app controls the audio session. I don't know too many apps that support 128 frames buffer size. A host app supporting it doesn't mean it will work and it might actually cause issues if not supported.

It appears that IAA might suffer from some buffer size fragmentation. It becomes more of a "try it and see if it works" situation, vs. being a requirement of the app as part of the Audiobus SDK.

FWIW, I still would love to see a 128 setting in the new Audiobus at some point, notably for guitar apps like JamUp (and the new BIAS) and for triggering samples with my Fishman Triple Play. JamUp in ultra low is already 128. 256 is usable, but even switching to 186 with Sampletank seems to make a big difference for faster runs.

  • I'm just now reading about IAA and buffer size.

Does this explain why I get more stuttering in AB iOS8 with buffer size under 512?
Do all apps list there buffer size requirements somewhere?
