I hope Ben has his clipboard with him today cause these are ridiculously great features.... I'm willing to pay extra handsomely for this with no hesitation!
no no no, consensual and experimental at the least and the most
guess we are not only talking about Patterning in this thread today...
you know I'd just like to add that there is a pendulum swinging in the iOS platform and I don't know what is at the end of each side but whichever side is the side that takes IOS seriously, and wants the music community at large to take IOS music seriously, is hopefully on the same side as the side wanting music app development to keep growing and keep producing unique innovative apps that themselves keep growing and improving. The majority of the devs are cool people and the dev of Patterning in particular is cool people and I've noticed that he's not someone motivated by money as he's dropped great updates for free but I must confess... I don't want to give him a back rub, or a cnn peoples award.. I want to pay him cold hard cash, I wanna drop duckets in his bucket, and grease his palms with filthy greenbacks because I appreciate his talent and skill and because I appreciate the tools/instruments that he builds that help me make my sonic dreams come true. There is no shame in this game, I already have enough uncles, I need more beat machine.
Really like Patterning and as for extras to be added I would like to see...
1 : Sample Slice/Edit
2 : AU format
I want pads for live input.
Layered patterns would be great, as I feel like I want to add more than just 8 per pattern
But this app is rock solid, been on my pad from the start, in top 5 drum machines for me, any updates would be appreciated
But the list of bits mentioned, I would happily pay for, fingers crossed some of this might happen
I personally use Patterning as my go so sample player.
I use Twisted Wave for detail edits and adding individual effects.
Basically, I use Pattering for what many people use BM3. Use it for all type of sounds and even loops. It is a dream with AB remote for performances.
I'd start and end here.
I'd like to have live > @ExAsperis99 said:
Yes this is one thing I've always been hoping for. The "pads" are already there. Selection circles at left side. Could use those(with a switch? Or on second tap?)
Smart use of real estate. Sometimes I have a pattern in mind, and I tend to be more rhythmically intuitive than mathematical.
Amen!
I'm curious how do you use Patterning? do you program your let's call it 'main beats' (kicks, snares and hats) in Patterning or do you rather use it for spicing things up with percussive sounds and propability and rotation?
I use Patterning to program everything from drums to melodies, and everything in between, export the patterns for arranging in other apps. I would like to not have to export all the different patterns, I would like to be able to play all of the different patterns together alongside one another simultaneously. I view each pattern as a track and would like to stay within the Patterning app longer because it's so enjoyable.
I just want to put my samples into folders.
Import my library of samples and have it organized.
Just that.
100!
I've wished out-loud here on the forum for several of these very features. They are exactly the sort of things I want from Patterning. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. Though, if I had to let go of one, it would be small screen support. If that's already hard, adding a bunch of features and then getting it to work on the small screen would only be harder! I'd rather have the new features.
These two alone could add so much variation to individual patterns. Even if you could only freeze (or rotate) a single parameter lane per track, zomg. Would be very 'Patterning' and would be quite the differentiator.
Play every X loops via long press could work but it could also work like it does on Elektron machines. The existing Probability layer could go from 0-100%, 2x, 3x, 4x, 6x, 8x. 100% would be moved to ~85% of the way up, visually. The last 86-100 (again, visually) would be every 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 (at the edge). Though, that could break old projects if there wasn't some conversion utility based on last save date or something.
Sample slicing would be cool but it's lower priority to me than most of these. Would quite happily pay for this stuff via a new Patterning 2 release. I totally agree with @kobamoto's sentiment that Patterning is indeed very special.
I just came to say this, except please allow user programming. It would work great as an automation layer like Pan—adjusting the automation below the line micro shifts the sample back, above the line micro shifts forward.
That and universal would change my life.
You guys are saying everything I am wanting from Patterning:
Especially individual rotating - locks / shifting single patterns off the grid /probability /random variations / samples in folders.
Like many here - I want to use Patterning for melodic content (mainly )
AUv3/Audiobus state save: AUv3 is, obviously, preferred but if it's too much of challenge, adding in AB State Saving would be fantastic.
+1
Dagnabit! I meant I had a 32GB iPad 2017 and I have a ton of free space. But I'm going to take a closer look at things because otherwise it was one of my favorite apps and actually ran decently on my old iPad 2. It is just that sometimes it refuses to start up and I have no idea why.
Never really thought of improving Patterning. It's such a powerhouse. $$ well spent. But I guess a few additions like AU, Universal iOS, and Pads would be nice too.
Patterning having pads would clutter it up, and I feel like it’s completely out of character of the spirit of the app to have them
Wow, everyone. There are some really cool ideas here, thanks for sharing them. I want to say that I do love hearing feature requests (...most of the time...) and take them into account when deciding where to put my time and energy. With some of the ideas, the issue is more about figuring out how they would work inside the UI. With others, it's more about architectural changes to the underlying sound engine & data model. Those are obviously harder to implement, especially between major releases. I guess I wanted to chime in to let you know that I am currently working on Patterning 2. (I had been working on Chordion 2, but it was taking way too long so I needed to switch gears for awhile to get a fresh perspective.) I'm 98% sure it will come out this year. I think that in a couple more months I should be ready for beta testing and will start sharing more information at that time. All of the major architectural changes have been made, and I'm mostly working out the UI and workflow details. Some variations on the ideas here are included, but not all of them. @FlightManual I promise you will be able to organize your samples into folders. There are also a lot of things that I think are really really useful and cool and hope you will find improve the app significantly, even if they aren't things you were imagining or hoping for. I will wait for an official press release to let you know about all the new features. (Shameless plug : you can follow Olympia Noise Co on FB/insta/tw or join the mailing list and you'll be the first to know) As implied by the name ("2"), this will be a new purchase and not a free update. It seems like most people here understand that, so thank you for your support! And your patience!
@ph8aerror Sorry it's been crashing for you. If you want to email me at the ONC support email I can hopefully learn about what's going on and fix it.
Sweeeeet! Good luck with it.
damn that was the best app news ever, thank you Ben, and by making it a new app you've satisfied the whole community in one fell swoop.
Oooh! I hope it has new color themes (yes, I’m serious, it would be great)
@benkamen
Great news. Now you should quickly get off the grid before the request/demand thread begins! Although in addition to playable pads...a sampler!?
I'M DONE Sorry..
Crashing? For me? I think you have the wrong guy or I expressed myself incorrectly. It's a "powerhouse" meaning it's been fvcking great and can't think of anyway to improve it. Well done. Keep up the great work.
@benkamen and to think about it... Patterning has never crashed on me (knock on wood) and I'm on an iPad Air 1, running it through AUM, with separate chans and at least 2 synths.
@benkamen - happy to pay for V2 !!!
@benkamen Patterning does a good job of switching songs mid play. Some 4 bar quantisation and tempo lock between songs like Grooverider has would make this an interesting live set tool. That and multiple disc things (up to 4 like traktor).
