Snaps, Crackles and Pops Discussion

Would like to pose this experiment to the community.

I always close all apps in the task bar before starting anything music related and open Audiobus first.
I have an iPad 2 on IOS 6.1.3 with Audiobus 1.0.2.5.

The other day I tried a typical Synth > Audiobus > Output session and it sounded horrible. No, it wasn't my playing! :o) - I had crackles/intermittent audio, etc. No other apps were open in the task bar. The Latency setting in Audiobus didn't impact anything. The Synth app by itself sounded fine...

On a whim, I rebooted the iPad. Tried the same thing and sounded clear as a bell! I've had this problem intermittently before - some times it worked, sometimes not.

Any ideas? Anything known with iOS (6) typically doing that or apps possibly not freeing memory - or is that even possible?

So as an experiment, I notice that a lot of users seem to also have a similar situation. I wonder if rebooting the iPad would clear up those issues, like I witnessed?

Next time you have snaps, crackles, and pops - try rebooting and see if your experience improves... I'd appreciate your feedback. Granted, I doubt if Apple would fix any 'leaks' on 6.1.3, but may be interesting to see if iOS 7 has a similar solution or workaround, as well. I'll still be camping on 6.1.3 for a while, myself.

It would also be cool if any dev's post their view. Another interesting point, I wonder if there there's any app that truly detects free 'RAM' or some other process that may be causing this, or do sandbox rules prevent this? It would be cool to baseline a 'clean' view and a 'dirty' view.

  • Hey Yendor. I've experienced some of what you're describing but I don't know exactly what's meant by rebooting. Be glad to give it a try if you would fill me in.

  • Sometimes when I'm having glitchy sound issues like you described, I do a "soft reboot". (Hold down the power button till the off screen comes up, THEN hold down the home button until the off screen goes away).

    I think that's a RAM reset, or something, right? It helps me out sometimes!

  • My understanding of a soft reboot: Hold home and power buttons down, and do not release until the Apple logo appears.

  • I shut mine off every time before connecting to the audio interface. I believe that was recommended by the manufacturer. Haven't been able to pin done any one trigger, though switching to 512 frames in AB seem to help. I'll chime in if I discover anything else.

    Bottom line, if all apps are closed, why wouldn't RAM be freed? it's possible it could be something else like a hogging process, but how could we tell?... Could it be apps coding that doesn't release memory back to the system?

    But just wanted to see, as a collective, if others see reset/reboot/restart as a means to improve our "instrumentation" success for clean audio. Why? Then it could be related to a previously closed app or iOS issue...

  • I had some issues like this yesterday, when recording piano. iGrand -> AB -> Cubasis on an iPad 2, iOS7. There was stuttering and wierd noices, especially when playing a bit faster. I assume it was because the midi notes couldn't be processed fast enough? It was of course recorded as audio in Cubasis, but I also noticed that the piano fell out of sync more and more towards the end of the song. I ended up deleting the track.

    I'll try to reboot before I record it again. Don't know what else I can do, as I had no other apps running, and the iPad was in flight mode.
