Help me catch up - best AUs of the last 12 months

I’ve been off distracted by all things Native Instruments, Ableton and Soundtoys, and now that my faulty ICA4+ is about to be replaced, I’m looking at jumping back into IOS land. What are the best AUs of the last 12 months or so? Rozeta and Audio Damage apps have been great to work with. Apart from that, I’m pretty much out of the loop.

What are some of your favourites and why?

  • KQ Dixie. Because DX7.

  • Zeeon is at the top of my synth list. Simply put, it sounds incredible and allows for incredible depth from a sound design perspective. FAC Chorus, Reverser Delay and WaveFolder have all been a treat on the FX side.

  • +1 for Zeeon. I use it in nearly every beat I make. I can’t really say any other synth is used as consistently as that one but if I had to pick some others then KQ Dixie, Kauldron, Phospor 2, Model 15

Model 15 and zeeon are the best alive, warm sounding "analoge" synths on ios to date. Its on my itinerary to make some sound banks for both

Zeeon is the only AU/iOS synth I really use anymore. Model 15 sounds great but on the 9.7 inch in a little BM3 window the whole UI is not inviting enough for me to learn what is under the hood.

Maxima is an awesome AU for nice and transparently err, maximiing your sound. And yup FAC Chorus is awesome too.

  • The Ruismakers and MV08 drum apps.

  • Besides the ones mentioned i really like Viking synth

  • Have any universal wavetable AU synths come along yet?

Agreed but I'd definitely add Mood to the 'best' list in this arena. Great base sound and the "LFO wherever you want" thing is just amazing for programming.

I've probably spent the most time in Ripplemaker. It's just so easy to get lost in it. If it had polyphony and Mood style "LFO wherever you want" controls, I'm not sure I'd ever use another synth (hyperbole, massive-lie-to-self, fine, whatever, but still). Sounds great and it's just really really fun to mess with.

  • Also, not curated but here's the big ass list: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/437850/#Comment_437850

@philowerx Would you start a new thread the next time you update your AU list? And then just update the top post as updates land? Would be much easier for the rest of us (and you, I reckon!) to keep track of.

Can't be done any more - you can only edit posts for a week now, so basically it's no longer possible to keep updating the first post in a thread.

I think this was done because someone went back and deleted the content of every post they had made in 2017, which was kinda weird, but then you do meet some weird sorts on the internet.

  • Shaper, Tc helicon voice rack, dub filter.

  • Zeeon sounds great. I like the Model 15 too but it’s so CPU hungry I can hardly use it at low latency with 4 or 5 other synths.

What about Lorentz and Redshrike? Been thinking about picking up the latter but I still need to confirm it receives Program Change. Looking to focus on synths I could actually use in the live set, so that’s an important feature.

  • Big plus 1 on brambos stuff. I’m putting together a tune in auria pro sequenced by the octatrack and so far i have 2 instances of ruismaker, 1 r fm, troublemaker and ripplemaker and it doesn’t even hit 30% max

Yep, edits are limited to a week now, so no longer possible. StudioES did the same thing in the INTUA forum too. Do a search for "yearly wipeout" and you'll find all his deleted post.

  • Some of my favorites over the past 8 months are the excellent DX7 emulator KQ Dixie by Ryouta Kira, Infinite by PPG/Wolfgang Palm, Ripplemaker by Bram Bos, Odessa Sequencer Suite by Bram Bos, Noise by ROLI, LumaFusion by Luma Touch, BeatMaker 3, DubFilter by Amazing Noises, GliderVerb 2 by Amazing Noises, Tap Delay by VirSyn, Dedalus by Amazing Noises, ZMors Modular by mobile only/Sven Braun, Foldr - Wave Folder by Living Memory Software, Virtual Room AU by MN Signal Processing, Addictive Pro by VirSyn, mood by apeSoft, QuatroMod by Audio Damage, FAC Chorus by Frederic Corvest, NFM Nikolozi. Some are completely new and a few existed before but added AU support recently.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I have a few others people have mentioned including Zeeon and Model 15 which both sound great. Also have Bearhawk but haven’t tried it yet. Think I’ll get started with Shaper and Voice Rack. :)

  • Beathawk. It’s been around for a few years but only became AU last year. It has really great IAP sound packs too. :) Cheers.

  • Haha, Bearhawk is pretty good too though, right?

Even on its own it’s a great way to quickly generate ideas. :)

  • Bearhawk sounds like an epic movie.

Or an amazing cartoon from the eighties. Like Thundercats! :D

They are both very good at what they do, especially if you like a warm and musical sound that sits well in the mix. I found that voice rack needs some equalising but that’s easily done with AUMs built in eq and will also depend on what kind of mic you use.

Shaper was an instant classic for me, I was very surprised that it didn’t get more accolades on launch. Some people reported that I can be problematic in Auria. I found it unresponsive a couple of times in AUM but a re plug sorted it. It also works as an IAA effect so you always have that option.

DubFilter has just been updated too so, no brainer really.

    Have fun!

Thanks, good to know all of that. :) Shaper appeals most to me as a distortion/character/saturation/harmonics junkie. It seems I have DubFilter in my account already from back in the day, I’ll have to give it some more love...

  • Not sure when it came out but I’ve been using the DDMF 6144 EQ a lot, and I’ll +1 both of those FAC effects (chorus + limiter). As mentioned, Tap Delay’s quite recently gone AU and it’s a good one.

Not exactly an AU itself, but Moebius Lab is now an AU host. Might appeal, given your reaction to Shaper, which is good too.

I’m going the other way, distracted by Ableton and Soundtoys, but I won’t derail the thread.

  • Hey guys,
Anyone tried saving a project in BM3 for example, with multiple instances of AUs with custom presets?

Are the knob positions lost after reloading the projects?

I had a test BM3 project, with a couple of Beathawk instrument tracks and somehow the mappings have been lost. The Beathawk instances load the default kit when opening the project.

I'm looking for a VST like workflow.
Having 3-6 instances of Zeeon with custom (not saved) presets and reopening the project from where I left off.

No, BM3 does proper state saving, as do all AU plugins (unless their implementation is buggy). It’s one of the key advantages of AU, and it should work almost exactly like VST/AU on desktop :)

This is a BeatHawk AU issue that has been intermittent since the beginning. Other AU in general have perfect recall

  • Going to also chime in on FAC Chorus and FAC Maxima. These are essential AU
