  • What's your budget range... you've got innumerable options.

  • I'm thinking that realistically capturing the sound of a harp would be no easy task in software!

    No, 50p.
Tbh I don't mind too much. Just after a few names.

Beathawk is AU and inexpensive. Their IAPs are hit and miss but the Baroque is a hit.

Sampletank is not AU and their IAPs are very expensive and as an IAA it doesn't always load properly but it does have some quality sounds.

I don't think either are very expressive however.

I'm a Gadget user and You've got several harp PCMs and synth options there, for example Chiangmai, Marcielle, M1 and Wavestation. The Orchestral IAP for Module clearly.

    ISymphonic

GarageBand has the new oriental instruments which are harp sounding and expressive.

For free samples you could load up into your own app of choice I'd recommend "Philharmonia."

  • Harp is one of the easiest instruments to get a realistic software version of. I use iSymphonic, but there are other good ones on ios.

  • I think ThumbJam has a nice harp.

  • I’m with Lucid. Beathawk’s Baroque pack is what I’ve used for a harp, and now we have the Orchestral IAP in Korg’s Module. I’m also an avid Gadget user.

Very nice indeed. You can strum it like a harp too, in key.

I would agree more with @BlueGreenSpiral than @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr about this. While it is not difficult to get something "harp-like" in sound by sampling all the notes in the scale and playing it on a keyboard, the symphonic harp is a very complex instrument. Like a guitar or violin you can make sounds on it in different ways (normal, muted, harmonics, fingernails, normal with release variations), and then you have the issue of how to play the various speeds of glissandi and arpeggios which go backwards and forwards, fast and slow, major, minor, augmented, and so on. When you pluck the strings harder, it doesn't just get louder, it sounds different and as with a piano, there can be resonance from the rest of the instrument.

The reality is that the harp is such a mega-complicated instrument that every developer of computer virtual instruments struggles to find a way to make it sound realistic.

My two cents for the best harp on iOS? Definitely use Thumbjam. Changing the key will have the same effect as stepping on one of the 7 harp pedals. You can do quick glisses and arpeggios. It will really sound like a harp. If you don't like the sound of Thumbjam, use MIDI to drive whichever harp you like better.

  • I use isymphonic for harp sounds. A must have app imo if you want strings and other orchestral sounds
