New to IOS music production

So I am new to iphone (long time mac user with ableton) I would like to have a mobile music production and performance setup and it seems audiobus will be essential to this (hence the reason I'm posting this opinion question on this forum)

I would like to get an audio interface that I can record audio with (1 or 2, preferably 2 inputs) has midi capability (for a midi keyboard with some faders and possibly pads) and some synths to perform and record with- realistic organ and piano sounds would also be great.

I was thinking of just getting the IK iRig pro Duo as I could use it at home and on my iphone 7 plus- it has 2 mic inputs and midi headphones, lightning, etc.

What would you all recommend as a

1.)midi keyboard (or maybe another audio interface recommendation)-
2.) ios synth software that I can use on my phone and on my mac mini at home? I dont need huge modular synth control but I'm not against it either. Id like something that I can easily midi map faders and knobs on a midi controller to the synth parameters and DAW software on my phone.
3.) daw software for my iphone?
4.) i may get an older ipad in the future

really the main goal is to be able to perform with my phone as a synth and record mobile when I need to.

is any of this even possible? Difficult to find exacting info on whats possible with just an iphone.
any input is greatly appreciated! any input on completely different ideas is appreciated too!

  • Zoom U24. Just got mine and it works nice even on battery power

Prosonus itwo. Midi in/out. 2 audio inputs xlr/1/4" combos and works with iphone and ipad. $120 and sounds very good

  • I’m not sure what I’d recommend for a MIDI keyboard. I simply hook up my gigging keyboard via camera connection kit. I’m sure others will have better hardware recommendations.

Regarding everything else, well what genre(s) do you produce and perform?

  • My advice would be forget the audio interface, get a used iPad mini 2 16gb
Then search "free apps" on this forum...

So many of the best apps are iPad only and the larger screen is a better experience.

  • I second the "try everything free" before you do anything, but start that with your iPhone. iOS musicmaking is similar in some ways to what you may have done before but very different in others.

And this is the "Audiobus forum" but all manner of iOS musicmaking is discussed here so you've come to the right place.

Can you power it from the iPad?

No. There no interface that you can power from a phone/ipad that is going to support midi/multiple audio. It would drain the battery so quickly no would design it

There an single input audio interface (1/4") the irig hd 2 thats powered from phone or iPad. It used mostly for guitar

Bear in mind that prosonus itwo has traditional 5-pin midi so usb won't work (good thing in my case tho, most serious midi equipment is still 5pjn and old cheap keyboards often have 5pin midi out if you're looking on the cheap).

Duo is a good interface (a bit lightweight flimsy imo) but you're gonna want to run it off wall power not batteries. They don't last long. Honestly Id go with the prosonus. Its super durable and its cheaper too

If you have an iPhone here's my rundown of basics you'll need

    Audiobus 3
Loopy (super useful for coming up with stuff and great live too)
MultiTrack DAW (harmonicdog) is a more standard daw and super nice UI
Audioshare (makes file management/uploading files a dream since it's a document picker when you click upload on a web page it give you an option to upload anything in audioshare to sites)
Garageband is free so duh :)

  • Thanks so much for the info!

Garageband is free? the last time I tried to get it on my mom's brand new macbook air they wanted like $20!! But I'm downloading it on my iphone now.

is audioshare free? I guess if i'm field recording I'm gonna need the ability to pick and choose individual tracks and performances from my iphones daw or whatever I'm using to send to my computer. is that the best thing to use to do this?

*** also what iphone synth apps are good and cheap? and also work on mac? any recommendations there?

It’s so long ago, I can’t remember. What I can say is that AudioShare is one of those essential apps for IOS music makers.

Garage Band on iPad is free, but maybe not on Mac. I think AudioShare is around $5.

The iRig Pro Duo is excellent. I really like mine, quality is excellent, it’s nice and portable. I generally have mine plugged in, so can’t comment on the battery life. Audioshare is not free. I use Auria Pro on my ipad for a DAW, but it’s not available on the phone. A lot of folks use Aum as a mixer with Audioshare in the background. You’ll still need effects such as reverb, etc.

Can’t comment on Synths that work on both iOS and OSX, I’m not a synth guy. I’m not sure there are any. There are one hell of a lot of synths on iOS. I have Animoog and Moog Model 15, which are very highly regarded here, but not sure if they have a version that runs on the Mac. Just remember, they are completely different operating systems, so what runs on iOS does not run automatically on OSX, and vice versa.

  • There are synths that have cross platform ability to share presets back and forth but the Mac version is usually 10X the price of the iOS version or so. I have phospor 2 by Audio Damage on my iPad. I think it’s like $7 but the Mac version is $60.
