  • No. It’s kind of ugly though isn’t it?

  • No, but looking at the specs and reviews I probably would, if I was looking for a small controller.
No drivers required, @ $35...not a bad deal...

  • OMG, Fisher is now Mono?

  • I’ve bought cables, adapters, etc. from Monoprice for several years. Never had an issue with any of their products. For the price I’d give it a shot.

  • i guess my samson is ugly too then.

Yeah, that price is hard to resist. And with the money I save, I can add on my own colorful stickers and pretty Christmas lights and spruce it right up! ;)
But seriously going to have a closer look at this $35 marvel.

My guess is the keybed might be a little iffy but enough lights and stickers and you wouldn’t notice. ;)

  • I ordered one. For that price, It’s worth trying.

  • Let us know how you like it. For me I found it’s not worth getting it shipped to Canada and paying duty.

  • says PRO audio on it so it must be good B)

seriously though .. decent spec for price

  • Not a complaint at $35 but just to note: doesn't seem to support aftertouch. https://downloads.monoprice.com/files/manuals/606304_Manual_150320.pdf

Doesn’t look like it. It is velocity sensitive and has a plugin for a petal. I will post some pics and give my limited opinion and answer any questions when it arrives in a few days.

  • Looking forward to a review, as I might take the plunge.

  • It should be in my hands tomorrow. I hate to say it but I am kind of excited. I don’t have high expectations of it for $35 so it could easily exceed them. I guess that is why I’m excited.

I just bought a powered hub from them. Not enough juice to power up an iPad or iPhone. I think I'm rather wary of anything Monoprice now especially since their return policy (you pay shipping both ways) isn't as friendly as other low cost retailers.

  • I’ve bought several items from them, including their 15W tube amp and have always been pleased with their products.

  • Ok, got it and the first impression is....

It’s worth $35 bucks. It is heavier than I thought it would be which is good and bad. Good that it doesn’t slide around while playing it, bad that it makes it less a portable. The keys are fair, not cheap like a toy, and have a nice even weight with an advantage stroke. The rotary knobs feel decent. It is very easy to get going with. It comes with a USB cable, just plug it into the camera adapter (no external power required) and direct it to your synth or whatever. I configured it going strait into Kauldron and using AUM into Zeeon and iSem and some others. One thing I am kind of on the fence about is the keys slope away from you, it looks a little off but it feels ok, in fact I think I may like it better. The only things that feel cheap are the Pitch and Mod wheels and the Slider. They work, they are solid, just have a cheap feel. This is obviously not a $1000 dollar keyboard, not even a $200 dollar keyboard, but I think aside from the Pitch, Mod and Slider, I would say it would run with the $80 to $100 dollar keyboards. I have not even edged into any of the functions so I am going to read up on the manual and see if there are more hidden treasures in this little $35 dollar deal.

If anyone has any questions I will do my best to answer them.

  • @JudgeDredd Awesome. Thanks for the detailed feedback on this. :)

  • Thanks @JudgeDredd....sounds like that would work for me.

  • I bought the 49 key version of this momoprice keyboard. It mostly works OK - but I think that sometimes when you play a chord not all of the notes make it through. If you play a scale then all the notes come through. But playing multiple notes together/rapidly it seems to drop notes. I can’t 100% verify this - just throwing it out there to see if anyone else had noticed this.

  • @HokieKev - try a midi viewer app to see if they're making it through.

Or a quick recording of the midi and view it in a piano roll, if you don’t have a midi monitor type app.

  • @JudgeDredd Could you give us a follow-up report? How is it holding up, and did you find any goodies? ;)

It's holding up nicely. The rotary knobs are a pain because they are encoder type not analog type so this makes them pretty much useless for midi cc. The pitch bend and mod operators work nicely and octave switching works well. Still worth the 30 bucks. Only issue now is, it makes me want something bigger and better. :)

  • You might be able to get the encoder knobs to work with CCs using the technique described here. https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/24411/model-15-relative-cc-support

I suspect that the monoprice controller has some extremely cheap encoders. This means poor accuracy of the encoder and you either get big stepping or you need to turn the knobs a lot to change values. Because having to turn the knob too much is pain in the ass, cheap solution is to just make it step instead or use some smoothing thing, which i doubt this has. Think having the encoder to read whether you turn the knob, which direction and when you stop 12 times vs 36 times in a full turn.
