DM1 for iPhone updated

.

Comments

  • Does it now have adjustable velocity levels on the phone version as opposed to the 2 settings it has at the moment?

  • 22 new drum kits woot!

All of this news is good. DM1 is always my standby, go-to drum machine. When does this update hit for iPad?

  • I think it could be cool upgrade if in the next update you can put DM1 in the output slot in audiobus, in this way you can sample\record synth sounds for personal drum kits. I have very cool noises and drum sounds that I can't use. :/

Hi synthandson, I searched all thru DM-1 and online and can't find the area where to audiopaste sounds into DM-1. Is this only for ipad or also for iphone?

    Thnx in advance

Edit: oh never mind. Found it. You have to create a new kit.

Does anybody know if you can have a kick from one kit and a kick from another kit? It seems like you're limited to one one of each piece (kick, snare, hi hat) unless you manually paste in another kick sample

One more EDIT: I think I found a bug. When I try to create a new kit and use Audiopaste from Audioshare, it only pastes into the first track which is the default kick track. Anybody else have this problem?

  • Hi synthandson, that's a shame as I just tried out the export feature of separate tracks into auria and it worked flawlessly. Can the S4 do separate track export as well as import/Audiopaste your own samples? (If possible 24 bit samples?)

On a related note, the iPhone DM-1 doesn't seem to have the capability at all to import your own samples.

  • On ipad I can only paste one sample into kick drum slot, no other slot.

Thanks for s4 tip. Will try out the pitching

  • Can anybody share good drum samples for dm1?

  • Thanks @synthandson for mentioning s4 pad. Just got it and I like it. Just one major thing missing or I just can't seem to find: they say it has core midi in but I cant figure out how to get it to respond to my midi controllers. I hope they'll add or improve that soon.

  • Thanks for the beattips tip synthandson! I'll check it out.

  • any of those for hardrock/metal drum samples?

  • sorry to be dense but would someone pls be so kind as to tell me how to import sounds (dropbox or audiopaste) into the iphone version? i've searched everywhere. fingerlab is no use - manual just describes how to do it on ipad.
everything points you to create a custom user kit, but iphone options only show me "vintage, acoustic, and dm1"
any help much appreciated - THX !

To my knowledge, you cannot. I tried to do something similar because I liked that feature on the iPad version.

However, I've since found better ways to do this. I'm convinced that Jam Maestro, as of yesterday's update, is the best:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jam-maestro-guitar-tab-sequencer/id596628003?mt=8

On sale right now for $2.99, now universal, and he unlocked all the previous sounds that used to be IAP's. It has 10 onboard kits that are GREAT, you can rearrange and customize them, and they include some sounds from Derek B's kits, which are excellent. Even better, you can upload your own kits directly from DropBox (wav files), assemble them into a kit file, and then save/export it. He said you can store up to 40 of them, but you could keep more in DropBox, etc. and move them in and out. At $2.99, there's really no reason not to own it for drums alone, let alone all the great other stuff it does with guitars and tab.

If you want another alternative, I'm a fan of EasyBeats 3:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/easybeats-3-drum-mpc-program/id643525506?mt=8

Also universal and a small file size, going for $4.99 right now. Good onboard sounds, and you can make your own kits and save them. You AudioPaste in wav files into the individual pads - so it works best with an app like AudioShare to house the files. Two weeks ago, I thought this was the greatest thing ever, but I think Jam Maestro has raised the bar.

It's become kind of fashionable to hate on DM-1 lately, particularly for the sound quality of their onboard sounds. I think that's a little unfair - it's still a great app with tons of features and a cool interface. But the iPad version is superior, and one of the main reasons is the lack of DropBox/sound importing.

  • And that one shows the drawback of seperate iPhone/iPad versions...

I don't always hate it if the value proposition is good to begin with. I think I paid $14.99 for BIAS on iPad and $4.99 on iPhone (sales). But for what you get, you could argue that's a $30+ app. The iPhone version, however, doesn't compromise functionality.

With DM-1, they obviously had to do some reworking to make it fit the small screen. It sucks that features are missing, but I understand a modest price to rework the layout.

BUT...what I really hate about non-universal apps is that the it just makes it tempting for the iPhone version to get left in the dust. The king of that is probably Animoog for iPhone. Isn't that non-AB still!? If the app is universal, any change in compatibility or features to one is imputed to the other.

  • Amen to missing features on phone versions, especially now that the 5s is as capable as any device. I dropped a polite note just yesterday to Moog about adding AB to the phone version. Got a reply pretty quickly, saying they have a dedicated coder working on it. No time frame specified, but fingers crossed!

  • StormJH1 - really appreciate the quick reply and info !

at the same time i posted here i also posted on the fingerlabs facebook page and fingerlabs actually responded quickly to me - confirming that importing sounds is not currently possible on the DM1 iphone version.

Easy Beats 3 is easily my favorite and most-used app. So easy, intuitive, clean. The developer is very nice and responsive to email, as well. I actually just rec'd an email from him yesterday! Anybody that doesn't have this app and is looking for something easy for throwing samples on pads then playing with in a sequencer - get it. You won't be sorry.

Had never heard Jam Maestro but will buy that immediately. Sounds excellent.

    Thanks again!

Glad to hear you are a fan of EasyBeats 3. I feel like a lot of people don't take that app seriously, but it can absolutely be a serious tool and it adapts well to iPhone. Step-by-step velocity and pitch control is awesome too.

Jam Maestro can be easy to miss because it doesn't have "drum" anywhere in the name. And the description emphasizes the guitar tab features, which is what it does, but it also has this fully integrated drum programmer in there, and the drums sound great.

Here's the thread previewing the update that just went live, where I learned about it:
