MV08 would get my vote. What aspect of it are you not too keen on?

Is this MV08 still worth it today (2023) and do you know if it’s still getting updated regularly

    • Yes it's still worth it. Absolutely still worth it.
    • No, it hasn't been updated in a long time - more than three years.
    • No, it hasn't needed to be updated because there is nothing wrong with it.

One thing to understand - the AUv3 doesn't include the sequencer. You have to sequence it from something else.
(Disclaimer: I've not tested on iOS/iPadOS 16 as I don't have a compatible device. Works fine on the latest v. 15 though.)

Boom 808 (and Boom 909) sound quite nice but both could use an update in the connectivity/recording department. I still have them on my iPad but they don't get used that often...

I never heard of these ones. They’re not even in AppStore anymore. They sound like something I would of jumped on if I had been using iOS music only years earlier

They were OK at the time but would be little to get excited about today if they were still around. MV08 beats Boom 808 by a long shot. AudioKit 909 beats Boom 909 by a country mile if you can live with the kick drum being incomprehensibly delayed from the beat.

You can’t beat some free 808 samples that have been put through a $40k compressor :) : http://blog.liveschool.net/fairchild-808/ All the samples are individual hits.

Page not found msg from the LiveSchool link.

I did a search on that site and was able to find them, however, they wanted way too much personal info for my liking, so I passed on them.

I just didn’t feel that the UI of MV808 was quite what I was looking for- eg DM1 feels more sort of instant and a closer representation of what that older style of drum machine has to offer. I was hoping for something as close to the original as possible in the aspects of sound and functionality- so I would have sacrificed Link for this. Having said that- and judging by the responses- I may have come to this conclusion a bit too hastily. I think I will have to give it another chance. It seems to be a clear favourite.
For some reason I have spent a fair bit of cash on apps that I knew that I would probably hardly ever use- but have never bought Funkbox- even though I thought I probably would.
I am planning to have 808 drums as a solid background for a while- let that do its thing and sort of take care of itself- whilst I concentrate on the musical parts- and see how I get on. To that end as I write this I am now thinking of sampling the life out of MV08 and dropping them into Patterning and DM1- then playing them together with link- the DM1 doing the Bass Drum, Snare and Hats (with its parameter randomisation) and Patterning doing it’s Patterning thing with all the rest of them. Something good has to come out of that surely..........eventually.......... better look out Blocs Wave to help find it.
    Thanks! :)

If you're going to go this route, you could probably save yourself a load of time by grabbing the samples here: http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufacturers/Roland/TR-808/samples.

Another way to go if you don't dig MV08 (though I bet you will change your mind as I did), is to load it as an AUv3, in which case it just acts like a sound module, then drive it from other apps. If you're looking for 808 vibe, Rozeta X0X driving MV08 is a nice feel, and Rozeta even introduces @brambos lovingly crafted emulation of the 808's timing quirks.

An amazing set of REAL 808 Samples recorded and selected by Michael Fischer. Thanks for this link!

  • I look to Pure Acid for this

I think I’m gonna on and grab this (MV08). We need more apps like this. I’m getting Caustic & Different Drummer too. It seems Father Time has been good with these ones.

  • The Elliot Garage apps aren’t bad either. Pulse also comes with some 808/909 samples that are really decent. DM1/2 if you can live with IAA.

Lastly, VADrum2. Isn’t explicitly stated it’s an 808/909 but it seems to be what it’s going for, and I love it.

It’s definitely implicit in the VADrum description and it come through loud and clear. Nice mix of 808-like and 909-like sounds. I used to lean on the EG apps a lot but not so much anymore. Oh, and Logic comes with a few 808 kits which sound pretty good to my ears. ZenBeats too, naturally.

Oh duh! Zenbeats is my go to DAW and I forgot somehow 😂 I love VADrum though. It’s become my go to for that sound I think.

Also idk if it was mentioned but Ruismaker is another obvious one.

    Definitely. amazing app.

  • if you are ok with desktop, UVI Prime 8 is legit. True to the og 808, but with some added functionality if needed. Plenty of built in classic patterns as well. its on sale now

    https://www.uvi.net/en/vintage-synth/prime-8-plus.html

also, what about just using whatever drum machine / sequencer like Bram Bos Hammerhead, and loading it up with your own custom 808 samples. there are some good Gold baby samples that are more old school, Or you can get some free more modern 808 samples from Cymatics

  • Is the new King of Bass app not suited for this?

Depends. If you’re wanting 808 drum sounds then no. If you want that classic 808 bass, it can definitely do it.

Good bunch of samples. Thanks for that.

  • @NeuM It really is. No problem. I like that bunch of samples a lot. He's a good dude and knows his stuff for sure.

I had a free d/l pack with 808 from Samples to Mars, tweaked them further in FAC Drumkit, very nice.
But if you want a good 808/909 VA then VADrum2 is awesome. I wish it’s UI was a little bit more user friendly, but the sound is there.
