Buying Hardware Today Don't Try to Talk Me Out of It (Poll)

It's been a long time coming. I'm ready to pull the trigger on the Digitakt. Like, today.

I've compared it to the MPC Live, to the Push 2, to various Maschine machines. But I think I need a standalone that has an option to link with a laptop.

What I want to do is make elliptical, lo-fi tracks. Not at all interested in current trends, and not trying to sound like anybody.

I feel most creative in Samplr, TriqTraq, Modstep, Gadget, Groovebox. (Although I grow weary of Gadget's EDM sounds.) I've had more success in iMaschine than iMPC. Cubasis is nice and Auria is gradually becoming less intimidating.

I'm really drawn to happy-accident weirdness. Sparseness is good.
I really need to be able to easily sample from cassette, turntable, iphone, Edirol, etc.

The only other choices I see are a Volca and a Circuit. I'm a musician, not a technician.

Please advise.

  • I should add that these things cost roughly $700, $300, and $150.
I'd obviously prefer to save money, but I don't want something that is ultimately limited. I don't plan on buying a whole studio full of gear. (Yeah, yeah, talk to me in 18 months....)

  • Well that was easy! Don’t forget to post pics of your digitak in action for us lustful observers.

  • Are you looking for groovebox to produce full tracks on or just a drum machine for beats?

  • Have you tried Grooverider? I would hate for you to spend all that money and only come away with easier sampling from different sources.

  • Look at this thread on the Elektron forum.. all Digitakt only productions

    https://www.elektronauts.com/t/your-digitakt-only-productions-do-you-have-some/42865/214

I bought a Digitakt and rarely ever touch the iPad anymore, except to sample off it. It's a great source of synth sounds etc

  • If you're in the US, you can save $100 on a digitakt today via the ebay 20% coupon. https://pages.ebay.com/promo/2018/0309/7020.html (It maxes out at $100 discount)

I'm considering the very same right now. I just missed one for 625 on craigslist!

Exactly what i just did. $620. Holy cow I need a bourbon.

    Wish me luck.

  • But isn't the Digitakt only mono samples?
    - stupid pointless decision by Elektron :#

  • Congrats! I’m jealous but I just went super deep and got a moog... so I must wait for my inevitable elektron gear as well.... good luck not wanting a studio worth

    Ditto.

  • For me the Digitakt is far and away the best musical purchase I've ever made. It's so fun and relatively deep. Shameless plug of an all digitakt track I made. https://m.soundcloud.com/raindro/gold-fizz

  • You done good.

  • Just buy an op-1 and a couple of pocket operators. Should keep you happy for a long time.

Well, then I guess the Digitakt could be your perfect choice.
The first thing I did with mine is sample off web radio and have a night of fun.
Lo-fi lives from hacking, crunching, cutting your sounds and with the useful modulation, envelopes and trigger/micro-shift you can even "hack" granular sounding tracks together.

I feel most creative in Samplr, TriqTraq, Modstep, Gadget, Groovebox. (Although I grow weary of Gadget's EDM sounds.) I've had more success in iMaschine than iMPC. Cubasis is nice and Auria is gradually becoming less intimidating.

The big and great advantage of Gadget is MIDI SLAVE SYNC!
You just connect it to the Digitakt over USB MIDI, hit play on it and Gadget will follow.
I think that's a great combo because Digitakt is strong with sampling and Gadget is strong with a wide number of PCM and synthesized sounds.
I can't imagine anything you would need any other iOS app for, except producing new noises you'd sample with the Digitakt, and yes, I agree, happy accidents

If GrooveRider GR-16 already had Midi Slave Sync, it'd be my choice over Gadget, but for now DT+Gadget offer more than enough to get creative.

hey syrup I don't know if you've seen this but the rk-004 looks like it might be right up your alley. Jakob is demoing it here but I think this would be sick with the digitakt, even feeding back into itself for mucho shenanigans!

  • I keep trying to get out and they keep pulling me back in..... oh how this might make a sweet companion for the digitakt?

  • Mine arrived yesterday. I had been out with coworkers, and I came home a little late and a little buzzed and there was the box. I suddenly felt like I had bought a gym membership — would I use this, really? I opened it and held it. So much smaller than I expected, but very solid.

And in short, I was afraid.

But I plugged it in. The sounds are very very good.

    More later.

  • :) I'm only using mine as a sampler right now..... I'm sure Syrupcore will teach us some midi tricks that I still won't get but will love just the same

  • I'm gonna wait and see what the OP-Z can do. Shouldn't be too much longer. It might turn out to be a great sequencer for the ipad.

I keep going back and forth with that one... I don't know what to think yet
