MIDIWriter - Bluetooth keyboard MIDI controller

Does anyone have experience with this app? I'd like to be able to use a regular Bluetooth external QWERTY keyboard to send MIDI control keys to the iPad. Not so much for note input but for CCs like loop control I'm loopy, etc.

anyone do anything like this?

  • Is this the app?

It looks interesting! I'd like to know more about it too! :-)

  • That's the one.

After reading up some more it sounds like Loopy can be controlled by any bluetooth keyboard out of the box, without this app, which is cool. But still, this app could be useful for other apps, potentially...

  • Good find ! I was just thinking about this and was going to suggest Audioshare or midibus projects to support normal key to MIDI mappings. Hoping to pick up a cheapo BT case/keyboard in the sale and use it to control loopy

  • Not sure if you're using a full sized iPad or a Mini, but if it's the Mini,... I just bought this Anker bluetooth keyboard cover for $19.99 after a $10 coupon code: http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Slim-Bluetooth-Wireless-Aluminum-Keyboard/dp/B00EL0J81M/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1384508028&sr=8-13&keywords=ipad+mini+keyboard+case+anker

    Promo code is 6NM94WQT

  • I was thinking it would be cool to trigger transport controls, like in a DAW, so if you're using a synth/instrument into a DAW via IAA or AB you can easily stop/reset the playhead without having to fumble with the small onscreen controls. Just tap spacebar or something. Not sure if something like that would be possible.

  • I have a iPad 4 but in any case will not be using the keyboard as a case or cover and just as a BT KB..
I wonder if this MidiWriter will be able to map any KB key to custom MIDI notes or even a group of MIDI messages. So you could have a custom 20$ hand/foot pedal with different MIDI mappings for different apps !

  • I use a Bluetooth keyboard to control loopy regularly. Love it. One big catch with Bluetooth and iOS you should know before you sink many dollars into it: for obvious (once you consider it for a moment) reasons only the app in the foreground will get Bluetooth messages. So you can't control loopy via qwerty Bluetooth while you synth wank in Magellan.

  • The blueboard works with apps in the background via a blueboard app that translates midi messages. I'd be very happy if someone came up with a similar solution for connecting usb midi controllers.
