How do I make this sound: Pollard Syndrum

Any apps that reproduce the sound of the Pollard Syndrum? I was just trying to recreate The Cars Good Times Roll and seemingly can't find a drum app from my arsenal to replicate the classic Tom sound from it.

If anyone has any ideas on an app that will do this or a patch for Patterning or BM3 that sounds close enough for me to manipulate, that'd be a great start.

TIA!

Wow, haven't heard about that one in a while!

The Pollard was a very simple synth that used a strike plate with a piezo disk attached to generate a trigger and voltage when struck, which in turn operated the synthesizer.
You can use any simple synth app to make that 70's-80s Pollard/Syndrum/Simmons sound like the one in that Cars song.

Typically you would set the filter resonance all the way up to make it self-oscillate (which makes a flutey sine-wave sound), and then use an envelope with a fast attack and a long decay to make the filter sweep quickly up and then fall in pitch.
    That's what makes that sound!

There's lots of other variations and techniques to make basically the same kind of sound (use a sine wave or triangle wave oscillator instead of the oscillating filter to make the sound, etc.) but the basic principles are the same, and this sound can be achieved with many of the available IPad synth apps.
Come to think of it, it's kind of suprising that no one has done a Simmons-type drum sounds app yet that could be triggered from a Midi sequencer or drum machine like Funk Drummer or Rock Drummer. That'd be fun! I'd buy it!
    How about it, developers?

    Hope this helps!

  • Yeah I think Simmons samples can get you pretty close.

  • yes, it's a simple synth sound, but I found surprisingly difficultt replicate - in particular the 'boring' version of that Cars intro.
Dunno the architecture of the machine, but Audiohub gave a good idea about the strategy.
Imho there's an envelope modulated pitch curve, which rules out all the drummies I've tried. Might be faked with some clever frequency modulation, though.
Generally you can setup any virtual analog synth with enough modulation capabilities (like independant volume and pitch envelopes, so it's rather to look in the synth than drums domain.

  • I've got Patterning (or BM3) ready to launch that intro once I figure it out. I think I'll give this all a whirl and see if I can simply use a regular synth to get me close enough. Thanks for all the hints, I just didn't even know where to begin as I'm new at this synthesis stuff!
