Next gen. IPad (pro) no headphonejack

I hear that the rumors on the next ipad is thinner bessels and also maybe no headphonejack - dos that mean that music making and musiccreation on the ipad is impossible. The speakers on the ipad are not unusable but almost!

  • Just means that you will have to buy an expensive widget if you want anything beyond the headphone adapter plugged into it at the same time.

  • Most musicians who use a MacBook Pro on stage don’t use the headphone jack... same is true for iPad.

If the next iPad loses the headphone jack it would be a pretty big inconvenience for casual use, but makes no difference for pro audio work.

The solution is using a usb audio interface. Or a MFi audio interface.

  • If one is already using an external audio-interface it's not a really show stopper.

The Lightning->3.5mm dongle works quite ok already and with the new MFI thing we'll likely see loads more with integrated 3.5mm jack with charging to boot.(Think CCK3 with a 3.5mm jack).

What I would like to see is more ports on the Pro's(Lightning and USB-C for starters).

  • I want to keep the headphone jack for everyday use but I would not miss it where music creation is concerned.

Unless your audio interface relies on the headphone jack for output like my old model iRig HD Pro. Then it's time for a new interface.

Also a pain in the ass to rig it up so you can charge at the same time. But dooable.

  • You guys got me to look up what the MFi stuff you were referring to was. It looks pretty exciting, and those cables for headphones seem to be fine. Just the extra purchase, which sucks, but at least there will be potentially cheaper alternatives to Apple branded cables.

So damn easy to lose though...

I’ll be shocked if they remove the headphone jack from the iPad. Apple has certainly had no problem shocking me in the past so...but the headphone removal was done to slim and waterproof the iPhone. That’s not really essential for an iPad. Again, I’m wrong a lot. Could be here. Just a gut feeling.

I mostly use my iPad for sketches and song ideas and always use a wired headphone because with bluetooth you have an annoying touch input lag (delay). I recently went back from a iPhone 7 to 6S because i screwed up the lightport already 2 times and lost 3 lightning/3.5mm dongles. Yes, I yes my devices roughly. I can't work without the headphone jack. An iPad without a 3.5mm is no go for me. Bluetooth is just not yet there at the moment, maybe in a few years.

Well, they also removed all interface jacks from the MBP, and converted entirely to USB-C, so I would not put it past them.

Truth to tell, as stated above, it’s not a big deal for most folks. The Lightning port was always a better connection point anyway.

  • Now that I've moved over to a Zoom U-24 audio interface I know what everyone has been on about the poor quality of the headphone jack. I've always had a guitar interface via the lightning port but getting input from my guitar and output to my headphones has just made things so much better. I don't think I'd miss the headphone jack.

I could not say the same about my phone. Losing the headphone jack on that will be a real travesty, which is why my 2017 phone is an iPhone SE.

Any recommendation for such Lightning port to audio adapters that allow to also charge the iPad?

Well many of them will work just fine with a USB3 CCK from Apple. My Zoom U-24, for example, plugs into the USB slot in the CCK and as long as the other side with the lightning port is plugged into the wall both the iPad and the interface are powered up.

Yeah, I am absolutely not suggesting it’s impossible that they do remove it. Its entirely possible, if not even a little probable. But I’ll ask you kindly to never bring up the absolute insanity that was the port disaster of the MBP. If you haven’t seen this video, enjoy...

  • I have a pair of headphones that the dongle is always on for my iphone and when I grab my ipad I just use the lightning port rather than bother removing the dongle. So I won’t miss it.

  • I don’t mind the dongle for my iPhone 8 nearly as much as I thought I would. I considered buying a few extra in case I lost one but so far no problem at all.

I will definitely get an iPad Pro when available. Dongle don’t care.

  • I like the central placement of the lightning port.

Same, the dongle just stays connected to my headphones, never have to worry about not having it.

    OMFG.

I love that video soooo much!!!

That man loves his dongles. I’ve seen it probably 50 times, and I have tears running down my face every time I watch it. Even just now it had me in stitches. It’s a brilliant editing job if nothing else.

I have one. I love it

So what dongle allows you to use a MIDI keyboard and hear your music at the same time? Because having to schlep out the audio interface every time you want to noodle on the keyboard is kind of a pain in the arse.

And of course if your interface doesn’t do MIDI then you need the powered hub as well. So much for convenience...

    What's this about?

  • der, i'm like totally up with buying dongles, man.
and also the proposed michael jackson style gloves apple are designing that people will need to wear when using touch screen devices. only an extra $200

If this is true then Apple’s unfathomable less for more policy continues. Quite how unpopular these decisions have to get, before someone ousts Mr Cook, I don’t know. But it really irks me that losing a useful port is purely for the purpose of selling a dongle we otherwise wouldn’t need.

Maybe this kind of anti-customer policy won’t matter at all, if Apple can keep convincing people that $1,000 is an acceptable price for a phone, or that having a speaker in your home that listens to everything you say is desirable.

  • On the up side at least it will be waterproof, for the tears you'll shed...
