Launch Control (or similar) with iPhone5

Hi all,

I've been thinking of adding my iPhone 5 into my live rig (two iPads), running arps on either SunrizerXS or Magellan Jr. But the phone is too tiny to manipulate an app's controls in a live environment. Will the phone be able to power one of the smallest controllers, such as the littlest Launch Control, on its own? And with that, which other controller might be recommended? I'm looking for rotary knobs, mostly. Thanks!

(I do have a knob-less Korg Microkey that the phone does power, but I'll happily substitute a knob controller in its place if I don't have to also use a powered hub.)

  • The LaunchControl works fine with iPhone 5 and so does the LaunchControl XL. No need for powered hub, just a standard Apple CCK needed.

One trick I sometimes employ is to have the LaunchControl go into an iPhone and then send Bluetooth MIDI to an iPad or another iPhone. This way you can have a controller on one device and a keyboard on another without the need for a hub at all. Of course, I also have a setup with a powered hub and two keyboards and two or three controllers when I want to get maximal!

  • Ok, good to know, thanks!

  • I just both got some new short 12” right angle usb cables to reduce clutter. They don’t work with the LaunchControl at all, just an endless boot up sequence of flashing lights. Even through a powered hub no success. Weird.

I tried the cable on my Akai MPK Mini mk2 and that works fine but needs a powered hub (that’s normal for mk2). Again, weird that the cable works for one device and not another. I’ve never seen that before!

Just thought I’d mention it In case anyone else has a similar issue. Normally any iPhone or iPad should power a LaunchControl without problems... unless the cable doesn’t cooperate!
