Discussing options

Well, I thought I would let you all know...that while I DO love Positive Grid's apps, sadly I will not be dealing with any more service issues with the app from this point on.

  • Wow! Sorry to hear that Derek. I can certainly relate. I just got laid off from my job that I had been in for 10 years (30 in the industry.) I wish you all the best!

  • Unbeilevable...I'm sure that you will find a new place soon..sorry man...and sorry about you job too @funjunkie27 what are your plans..

  • Good luck to both @DerekBuddemeyer and @funjunkie27 in finding the next chapter in your life. I will offer this; just remember that this is opportunity for you to do what you want...go back to school... take a vacation or break for a while....start a new career in a new or related field but stay positive and stay motivated and surely you will end up even better than you already are!

I'm in a bit of an awkward position because what I do is pretty specialized (satellite communications), and to add to that, my wife and I don't want to leave the Atlanta area, so that narrows down the options. Anyway, I appreciate the concern Doug. My former company is providing a severance package, which will hold me over for a few months, and I've got a few promising prospects already.

How about you Derek? Any idea on your next step?

  • Thanks Jared...that's exactly how I've been dealing with it.

  • Looking into some developers...I have my drum app I can fully concentrate on and I've got a side project I need to attend to as well...I'll still be involved in iOS music no matter what

  • Is the drum app entirely yours?

  • I've come up with all the samples, loops, and general idea of how it should work...layout, etc...the guys at The Blue Mangoo are doing the coding for me...great guys

  • Looking forward to that one Derek. I think the iOS music scene is still in its infancy, so you're probably in a good position.

  • I'm hoping so!! Lol. You guys have all been so cool here...so, "hats off" to all of you!! I'm going to get busy now...got a ton of work to start, but I will be around...my notifications are set to "on" and I'll try and get with you guys every chance I get!

  • Learn to code. Seriously. Go back to school while you're still young and this iOS music thing is just getting started.

  • @DerekBuddemeyer & @funjunkie27: Sorry for you guys.... i feel with you. I was in a similar situation some years ago but i found my way again... However, good luck to you!

  • @Derek - wtf dude? R u serious? Sorry to hear this man. I dont know the app industry at all but I will say that being an independent contractor was one of the best things ever to happen to me. I'd never ever want to work for someone else again. Mutually beneficial partnerships no problem but being an company employee in this new economy is just not the way anymore for both financial security and emotional happiness. I say you pocket the unemployment and go chill in either Thailand or Ukraine for cheap living, hot chicks and work on your next great business and album.

    Good luck man!

  • @DerekBuddemeyer @funjunkie27 Wow guys, really sorry to hear about all this! And right on the heels of such a successful app launch in BIAS. Derek I'm pretty surprised about this news, you've been a stellar community rep for Positive Grid - perhaps the best community rep for any music app company I know. May I ask, was your role with them primarily about being a community rep, or were you doing much more than that?

Also, best of luck with Drum Session - I'm really looking forward to it and you couldn't have picked a better dev partner in Blue Mangoo.

I will say though that while learning to code is definitely a lucrative skill in today's market, relying on app sales for your livelihood is not the way to go. I can probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of solo music app devs who are making enough from their apps to cover their cost of living. If you can afford to burn through savings for a while it's a really exciting space to be in, but when you've got bills to pay there are much better options in the freelancing space. Independent contracting is definitely the way to go. I could make in an hour as a freelancer what guitarism makes in 3-5 days of revenue. And I probably should.

  • Just unbelievable!

  • @DerekBuddemeyer @funjunkie27: Sorry to hear that, guys :(
Why do companies seem to choose a time just before Christmas/Holiday Season to do the dirty?
Anyway, at least it sounds like you both have a couple of possible openings - good luck! :)

  • It's their loss...I'm sure you sold quite a bunch of JamUp/BIAS copies for them, including mine!

Good luck,I'm looking forward to Drum Session!

  • Thanks guys. For me, I think it's an example of typical corporate American business. Terminations before the holidays just means the companies take that expense off the books for the upcoming year.

Derek - where is PositiveGrid's HQ? Aren't you in the US? I was thinking PG is in the UK.

  • all the best guys to both of you, @DerekBuddemeyer and @funjunkie27

  • Sorry to hear of this. And kudos to you for not bad mouthing the company as well. Of course none of us know the details but it's commendable that you're being professional about it, which is always tough after a layoff.

Best wishes in your future endeavors. You're obviously a positive, passionate person, so you will do well in any arena you explore.

  • @funjunking - I believe he's from Nebraska, based on an old topic on outdoor locations and I remembered that Derek mentioned the POD-Youth of the Nation music video at "Carhenge"

  • I believe PG HQ is in San Diego

They hope to maybe have me involved in a few projects later.

  • Startup! You guys can help guitar players get their shredding into and out of space! Literally.

  • Sorry to hear that, both of you. Been there myself a few times. Independent contacting tided me over both times, but the wife has this thing about predictable income(even though it isn't, not any more:(.

Satcoms? Spent most of my earlier years in datacomms, which included designing satellite error correcting data protocols and SNA muxing. Fun stuff.

Startup? Hmm. Maybe not satellite for live shredding - no way around the speed of light - but I've had some thoughts about remote collaborative music projects. Done some testing too, in the old MIDI days, with Electronic Cafe link-ups (fun seed for the imagination: with a <1Mb video compression scheme, what happens to the images of young ladies dancing in a line on MTV?).

Back to topic - iOS has done marvels for solo work, but I need someone to jam with and I think there is a open niche for a collaboration App, one that includes the ability to exert control over things like Auria and synths and effects. I do not think a One App to do everything is the right answer (seen a couple of such attempts), more like a One App to rule them all. I just can't afford to upgrade to a 64 bit capable Mac right now.

  • Predictable income is pretty high on my wife's list of expectations. Same with my mortgage company! Interesting to hear about your history in datacomms @dwarman. A startup is interesting. With the knowledge and talent of everyone on this forum, there's no telling what we could do. Derek is crazy talented on a guitar and there have been so many examples from the people on this forum of creativity, drive, and every other positive trait a company could want that it would be an amazing collaboration.

Darn that speed of light hurdle, but the collaboration aspect still interests me. I've long thought that that is where everything is heading.

Still, I think the most important aspect is what does happen to those young ladies and their line dancing?
