Memory issues

edited November 2013 in General App Discussion

Is anybody else running into a message saying that the iPad is running out of memory? I have a 32mb iPad 2 and I thought that would be a big enough iPad to run AB with Bias, Jam, Loopy etc... I am also running AD 480 as times as well....

  • Sounds like you're mixing up your memory...

Memory = RAM. Your iPad 2 has 512MB of RAM. When you open an app, it temporarily lives in RAM while you play with it. When you close the app, it is cleared from RAM. If the app is using too much RAM, or if you have several apps running that are all using a lot of RAM, it will cause a Low Memory warning, and typically the app(s) in question will crash & close.

Your 32GB is your total storage capacity. This is where the apps and your personal data are stored. This is not the same thing as RAM memory. It is unlikely you have filled your 32GB of storage. You can check by tapping Settings > About > Usage.

The newer iPads (iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Mini with Retina) all have 1GB of RAM -- twice the amount of memory as yours. Any of these can be configured in varying storage capacities (16, 32, 64 or even 128 GB models).

  • Actually, iPad3 and newer are twice RAM but more than twice of free RAM, so it's a big difference when you work with AB apps.

  • First...Doh!!, yes, I did mean GB not mb (what a dork!) and I can see that I'm going to have to look at the possibility of getting an iPad 3, since my 2 is only 512 RAM. I wasn't sure how the iPad allocated it's memory, but this makes perfect sense.

Thanks everyone for your quick responses!

Is anyone else out there using Ipad 2's succesfully given the low RAM?

  • Me, but that does depend on what you mean by 'successfully'.

  • Yes, I have an iPad 2 (well my wife uses it now) and until recently I used an iPad Mini 1st gen, which has the same RAM and CPU as the iPad 2. They work fine for the most part but when you start using more powerful apps, or use several apps at the same time through Audiobus, you will definitely experience crashes and stuttering and other issues because of the limitations.

By the way, if you are thinking of upgrading, skip the iPad 3. Even though it has more memory, it has the same slow CPU (processor) of the iPad 2. Plus its screen has twice as many pixels, which means more work for the already burdened CPU to handle.

Your money would be better spent on an iPad 4 or an iPad Air. You can find good deals on iPad 4's now that the Air is out.

  • Great thanks for the input! I think I have some shopping to do.....

  • Yes, I think an iPad 4 is probably my best bet at this point. I keep most of my files stored offline (cloud, dropbox etc...), so do you think a 32GB is enough?

  • Probably. Just remember you can't upgrade it later without replacing the whole device :-)

  • Very true! Hence the situation I'm in now. I bought the 2 thinking it was all I'd ever need! Oh well.....

  • Yes def don't "upgrade" to the iPad 3. Has more memory but claims are that the retina screen takes most of the extra making it similar to iPad 2 and as mentioned has same processor. Also to note that it's one of the most problematic versions for developers and seems as if most problems with apps occur on iPad 3.... So yea don't get that one!

    .

  • Yeah I think you're right...dang, it just keeps adding up doesn't it?

  • You're dealing with guys who are mostly in their 40s to 60s, so there are probably a number of us suffering from memory issues.

  • Ha!! I'm smack dab in the middle of that demographic at 55! We're doing pretty good for a bunch of old fogeys I guess!

  • You're in the right place then. I'm 53 and it's amazing that we can even keep track of all these apps, much less actually use them to create music....well, the others can, at least.
