Auria + Bias + iPad 2 = snap, crackly, pop

edited November 2013 in General App Discussion

At least that's my experience (via IAA - I didn't even attempt it through AB). Just wanted to hear if anyone has the same experience. I am hoping to upgrade soon, but until then I'd still love to be able to use this setup. Curious what the experience of others is like.

  • Are you on 7.0.4?

  • No. I'm on 7, but I haven't applied the latest update yet. Why do you ask?

  • Because there seems to be a horrid crackly bug with the latest update that is effecting SampleTank and iSem, but the older versions seemed to work OK, So don't update just yet

  • Ahhh, I see. Thanks for the heads up on that.

    .

  • Auria alone can cripple an Ipad 2! That's why I moved up to the Ipad 4 and am seriously thinking about getting the Air.

  • I too am getting the Rice Krispies effect on an iPad 2. (Bias+Jam or AD480) It may be due to low overhead as well....might be time to upgade to a 4

BIAS eats up more than 50% of my iPad 3's cpu all by itself. I switch it with AmpKit+ under the same conditions and the cpu usage percentage plunges into the teens. I don't know what BIAS is doing under the covers but it's doing a lot of it. I could use BIAS with Loopy but using it with Cubasis created sounds I haven't heard since I ate my last bowl of Rice Crispies. I tried using BIAS + Master FX + Cubasis but my iPad jumped off the table and punched me in the face.

  • @cheesesteak hahahaha, holy cow...I am glad I didn't have a mouth full of coffee when I read that because I'd be trying to clean my screen and keyboard right now. Several co workers stopped by to make sure i was not choking.

Well at least I guess I'm not alone. BIAS does appear to be a little CPU hungry. I guess I have to get a new Air. Dang.

  • Woah, whats that @Flo26? You're saying you're getting that on an iPad 4? Really? I didn't expect that...

  • I totally agree that BIAS is incredible. I feel like I have a new guitar honestly. I can record via BIAS into BM2 without any problems (other than a slight manageable latency). But when I load BIAS into IAA in Auria she no likey. Today I can't even seem to get Auria to play back at all with BIAS in IAA effect slot. CPU warnings abound.

  • I too love BIAS, but it is a major CPU hog! I'm surprised to hear about that the iPad 4 has the same problem...I was thinking of upgrading, but now I think I'll hold off and see what develops....

  • @Flo26 it just dawned on me what you're saying. However, I can't use Jamup as IAA in Auria, so that workaround doesn't really work for what I'm trying to do. Also, I'm finding that the tone is stepped on when I go through Jamup. No effeects in the chain at all and I can clearly hear the tone is not as pristine as it is when I export it from Bias. Maybe there's something in there I'm still missing, but that's what I noticed.

  • Ha! You're right. I didn't even realize there was an update to Bias already. I have automatic updates on (I know, I'm a wild ass). Thanks for the heads up. The last day I recorded with it was *that day the update was released. I suspect I left Bias before ever getting that update in place. Thanks again. I did write PG to ask if they were looking into the CPU usage for Bias, but I haven't heard back yet. If/when I do I'll update the thread here.

I got a reply back from PG. They just said that they're constantly working to make their apps more efficient CPU wise and that there are lots of new devices coming out with better CPUs. Basically they echoed what the voices in my head have been saying. "You need a new ipad. How important is eating relative to making music, really?"

  • I've never had to think about cpu usage on my iPad 3, no matter what combination of apps I had active, until I bought BIAS. Seems odd that PG recommends it for an iPad 2 and up. Maybe they should offer the iPad Air as an IAP. :)

  • Joined this thread late but no crackle here although I have NOT upgraded to 7.0.4. I'm on an ipad mini. My CPU usage was at 51%.

@Flo26 - Man I feel you on the workaround headaches. It seems like everyday I want to try an idea out in my head, I end up spending an hour or two researching a workaround, new app/old app that will do the job. But I agree it's fun and very convenient to just plop on your phone or ipad, plug in your guitar (or none at all) and work on music.

  • Hi I'm new on here. I too noticed the BIAS issues pretty much immediately on my ipad 4 in Auria. I'm hoping something can be done to lighten the load on the CPU but I'm not overly optimistic. IAA in general has a real beta feel about right now. My wider concern is that the new wave of 'über' apps is getting ahead of itself a little - rather than concentrating on working solidly within the capabilities of the average users device.

  • I'm definitely not an iOS developer but I find it somewhat hard to believe that an amp sim, even one as deeply customizable as BIAS, should eat 2x to 3x the cpu as a freakin' daw like Cubasis.

  • A DAW is just playing back raw recorded audio or MIDI data most of the time, which is cake for a CPU... nothing to it. An amp sim is processing a live audio signal, and something like BIAS with tons and tons of tunable effect options is going to require a LOT of processing power to apply to a live signal with low latency.

It's the same as applying effects in a DAW.... Most DAWs are fine CPU-wise until you start stacking effects on top of each other, then they start hurting. That's what amp sims do all the time :)

What CPU percentage does BIAS use on a new air or retina mini? Anyone know?

  • I'm very interested to hear that as well. Any Air BIAS users out there?

  • If anyone wants to gift me a BIAS code I can tell you :)

  • I don't think anyone would be dissapointed with the sounds they'll get out of Bias. If your guitar doesn't sound a lot better its really your fault. This thing gives you absolute control over your tone, and it's super impressive to me. I just wish it were a little less CPU intensive. Still love it anyway though. It's the best guitar modeler I've ever heard on iOS.

  • Same here, Ipad 4, Bias ->AUFX:Space->Auria... crackly sound
Unless I transfer the amp to Jamup, close BIAS, then it will be better....

  • I bought an iPad Air yesterday, so I'll shut up now. :) I was going to upgrade soon anyway but BIAS and the upcoming IAA in Cubasis forced me to abuse my credit card earlier than intended. Now I just have to figure out how to get my Cubasis and Loopy songs off the iPad3 and onto the iPad Air.

  • @cheesesteak congrats. Anxious to hear your feedback re Bias.
