Zurich by Gadget. audio in?

Is there a way to pipe the output of audiobus or aum into gadget to record it?

  • Not directly but a work-around for Gadgets quirky audio-recording would be to host Gadget in AUM, record all the Audio with AUM and then import it into Gadget from AudioShare. With Link everything should stay in sync...

  • Someday maybe...

Yep. Essentially you need to record into another app (eg audioshare or AUM) and then import the audio into Zurich as a second step.

You also need to be aware that if you’re recording more than 16 bars of audio you’ll have to go into each Zurich clip and manually shuffle the audio along for each scene. In my experience this still often produces a small click / glitch at the point of moving from the end of the first clip to the next.

Maybe someone has come up with a workaround for this though.

All in all, it’s not a hugely satisfactory way of bringing longer pieces of audio into Gadget unfortunately!

  • Import in Zurich is an issue.. but you can comfortably record more than 16 bars directly into Zurich .......across the scenes.. got this tip from soundtestroom

  • good tips guys. i’m just really struggling to find good options to record audio coming out of aum to multitracks on my iphone. basically the modern day equivalent of a four track recorder. quick and easily. b i’m looking to record 4-8 tracks together to get the main elements of a song of a song that pop in my head. Then when i get home i can stem them out to my computer daw and build a song around that. any other ideas, i’d love to hear them.

Is Zurich splitting the long audio file? That may be where the artifact arises, if it doesn’t look for zero crossings. Maybe cutting and creating your 16 bar sections in AudioShare may help.

I must be missing something here. AUM can record each of its tracks to a separate audio file that appears in AudioShare. AudioShare has a web server that you can connect to from your PC to take the audio over there. What else is needed?

Thanks. Yes, that’s the way to do it I think. 16 bar chunks in audioshare with microfades added. Or cutting at zero crossings I guess.

Bit of a faff though, so I never end up importing long audio into Gadget really.

yeah, i guess that can kind of work in Aum. but can’t instantly replay what you just recorded. you would have to get it from the file menu, and load it up as a playback file in a new channel in aum. lol I know i’m being picky, i’m just see the potential to make things very quickly in Aum. also a mod wheel for the keyboard would be awesome in Aum.

Solution: In function mode, switch the play mode from loop to one shot. This allows the loop to play past 16 bars without slicing or pops, clicks or glitching.

Edit: Make sure you are on a Zurich track first

Excellent. That saves a lot of work preparing loops for Zurich. :)

Wow. This is news to me. Thanks!

    So how’s it done?

    • Import a whole songs worth of audio into a 16 bar Zurich clip
    • Then in subsequent clips do I still need to shuffle the audio waveform along?
    • And are you saying that setting each of the clips to be 1 shots rather than loops then stops the clicks?

I think yes. One shot usually plays out to the end, regardless of a note off message or whatnot.
If you still get clicks, try setting Zurich to one shot before you import. Not sure if it’s necessary to do so, but if you still get clicks maybe try this.

Sadly I don’t think that’s the case past 16 bars. I just tried it and even if set to ‘1 shot’ a long piece of audio cuts at 16 bars when Gadget moves to the next scene. Unless im doing something wrong?

You know what? I just tried it and it did the same to me. I guess I will still cut the audio in AudioShare into 16 bar chunks until I can figure out if it’s possible to get Gadget to play out the whole file in one Scene.
Usually, if I have long files I am using with Gadget, I will use AUM file player of something similar, and use Link to play them in sync. But if you want to stay pure Gadget, I would suggest pre-cutting the 16 bar chunks and importing those into multiple 16 bar Scenes.

  • Wow, I kind of wrote off Zurich at first, but damn it sure is useful. In fact Gadget is just so much better now. Audioshare import on Abu Dahbi... how long has this been a thing?

Maybe it's an iOS 11 thing. I don't see that import source on 10.3.3, only iTunes and Dropbox.

or you could just loopback the audio from aum into gadget using the Ica4+. i set whatever i want to loopback as outputs 3-4 and record as 1 and 2 in gadget. i actually use the same to record outputs 3-10 as inputs 1-8 and keep 9 and 10 for external equipment in this photo.

when recording this way gadget just keeps recording into the next scene till you run out of scenes. no cutting up needed.

Blocs Wave is fantastic as a recorder / chopper for Zurich, AbuDahbi, Vancouver. It Links and loops, has EQ now, easy to build up material and audition it on the fly before export/import. Fantastic workflow.

You can point the AUM destination to Audiobus then Aum into Blocs via Audiobus...

You can also just use Audiobus and go into Blocs.

  • Oh and the BEST thing about the blocs workflow is this beauty...

You can replay it in AudioShare instantaneously. More complex solutions seem to be what you’re after, so I’m sure you find something workable among the other suggestions here. I’m only pointing out that per your OP you don’t nessarily need anything else.

Blocs definitely brings a lot to the table. B)
Someone here did a great video some time back about feeding blocks from Gadget in Audiobus. If you can dig that one up you’ll get a lot out of it.
