YouTube fullscreen in iOS Safari?!? (not working anymore)

  • I also used that "trick" in order to be able to use fullscreen mode on iPad, but I just tried again and it did still work.

But don't get fooled: If a website says "Your browser does not support X", it really means "Our developers were too stupid to implement X" :)

  • They're not stupid, they purposely crippled it to try and sell their Youtube Red service.

Yeah, I had planned to write "because they want to shove their inferior iOS App on your device", but I wasn't really sure if it was that or simply incompetence. But thanks for clarifying! :) (bit frustrated today, maybe I should go to bed now :))

Yup you're right, just refreshed the page and now it's gone here too. Byebye YouTube!

(I suppose someone is gonna put up a "proxy" site that just grabs the URL of the video and then just embeds it in a standard HTML5 player... or someone already has... maybe Google it?)

  • Split video is the nearest workaround...

  • YouTube got mucked up on iOS Safari a while back. Navigation is ballsed, and if you scroll through a vid, then select another listed below it needs a refresh to load.

  • I had this problem also some time ago. I think I solved it by chosing somewhere for desktop version (and NOT chosing mobile version). So search somewhere for it. Hope it helps. You see the option on top of my picture.

perhaps clicking this will help to get into desktop mode

  • You guys forget that the full screen maximize icon got moved to the upper left corner? I’m on Safari, have full screen, can Pip, even slide it to the right off the screen and keep listening in the background.

FYI if you’re still having problems the free Dolphin web browser can do this as well. If you minimize the screen and your audio stops, just swipe up to control center and hit play. Tada

  • Ok I just ran into your problem while trying to watch a video embedded here on the forum. Just click the share link and click the link that pops up.

  • I don’t like how this feature is missing because I would use the opinion to put it in a little screen in the corner so I’m able to play videos while my iPad is off. This was really helpful when I wanted to play music on my way to and from school. Now I have to use my phone and it’s just not the same.

Do you just want to hear the music? There are apps that will play youtube in the background. Unfortunately youtube tries to ban this behaviour so they keep getting pulled but ive always been able to find one.

I wish I had enough room on my iPad to get apps like that.

  • this just happened to me on the audiobus forum! i haven’t been able to pinpoint it exactly but i think it has something to do with where you click play on the youtube link. once i tried to play a video in here the ios video player was not working even on other videos from youtube.com. but force quitting safari and relaunching it from my youtube shortcut link reversed it.

i remember when i first set this up i had to get a content blocker to reliably lock out the default youtube video player, i’m guessing the blocker is now only able to do this on certain websites.

  • Chrome on iPad has been going back and forth with which video protocol to use. Driving me crazy. I found a nifty workaround. Paste this in browser while on YouTube. Will force full screen and allow picture in picture. I have it as a bookmark.

    javascript:document.querySelector("video").webkitEnterFullScreen ();

Yes, I just recently started seeing this too. Hate it. At least I know it’s not just me.

But I don’t get it if I go to the video on YouTube dot com. It only happens with videos that are embedded in another site. For example, I get it with a site like Synthtopia. But if I click on the YouTube link next to the full screen control there, it opens the video in YouTube and I can full screen it.

My guess is that it’s a recent Apple update to iOS Safari that broke it. We need to complain to Apple.

Your analysis may be inaccurate. For me the issue happens when using either Safari or Chrome.on an iPad Air 2 running iOS 11.3. Both browsers allow you to view videos full screen when you copy the link from the YouTube app for the video into their search bar. The same is true for the Firefox and Firefox focus apps.

It’s clear the change in how YouTube works is different and recent, however; it’s not clear what combination of factor(s) are causing these changes.

It might indeed be a security issue caused by Apple addressing some web browser exploits. My iPad 2 experiences similar issues although it does so in super slow mode thanks to Apple’s iOS 9 it’s stuck with.

The issue could be with changes YouTube has made in order to funnel you to their YouTube app or perhaps a combination of changes by both Apple and YouTube?

Or, the best way, change your default web browser from Safari to iCabMobile!

    iCabMobile is fantastic!
Have been using iCabMobile for years and I have never missed Safari - Both iPhone and my iPads have this, but on my Mac I still use Safari (and sometime Chrome)...

It has been developed since 2009 and you can find it here:
