After all these years, I never knew this! Thanks Doug, appreciate it. It seems silly but the updates tab always seemed to be up to date for me whenever I opened the app store. Apparently it wasn't! Thanks.
Pots and Pans quite nice. Music Box also fabulous especially when you tweak the tremolo mixer insert
@Tarekith, check out Dan Baker's page:

He does some really top notch videos on GB.
About a half hour before I heard about this update, my husband and I were in one of our deep daily music discussions. Yesterday’s topic? Expression pedals and how the world of expression controllers seems designed around history and the assumption that expression means guitarists using feet. Where’s the abundance of quality breath controllers, motion controllers, light activated controllers and facial expression controllers? And then shortly after the conversation I see the facial wah pedal control video posted here.
The possibilities that emerge when control systems move beyond a simple switch or linear controllers is profound. Imagine the possibility of a midi controller based on 3D measurements of a complex yet intuitively controllable surface. Super fine, multi parameter controllers that can go so far beyond pedal pushing or dial twiddling and that make xy pads look clunky, huge and awkward in comparison.
How about a generation of kids who view hardware controllers as grandpa tech and who can’t imagine needing a music studio larger than their phone, and who were brought up knowing how to map control parameters to any of those studied selfie expressions that are already an integral part of their language?
Can you even imagine how impossible it would have been to add a control systems class to all grade school curriculums? Providing it as a toy or a musical instrument, and letting children explore to whatever depths their individual intellects take them - and here comes a future step change in all kinds of computer control systems.
I can't wait for the day when I don't have to flip back and forth between a music app and a control surface in midi-designer, tc-data or whatever. The other half of yesterday's conversation with hubby was about how style of midi control surface, combined with Grooverider-16, leads to all kinds of non-linear song composition methods. Can't wait to see who develops a real musician's facial expression/position midi control app! ( @brambos - what's your next step in taking midi into the future?
)
Much thanks!
My thoughts exactly! +1 If anyone wants to do some tutorials, they will be appreciated! :-)
The Dan Baker stuff is great from what I've watched so far this AM.
Yup, Dan's an excellent musician, and the videos are superbly produced, as well as informative and with a lovely irreverent humour!
TheGaragebandGuide also has some more videos too that seem well done.
Quite an enjoyable video demoing the facial expressions in GarageBand

Interesting, almost like a talk box in some ways. It's actually been kind of surprising how accurate and quick the face tracking is on the X. I'd agree with the guy in the video that it's still a little slow to use for a performance though.
I wonder how long it will be until we see a quadriplegic artist creating beautiful music with face expressions. Hell, maybe that already happened and I missed it.
I think that behaviour only started in iOS 11.
Love the ending to that video!
It's called singing...
Or maybe trolling...
Next gen iPhone will likely add a sensor to the other side to both make the thing symmetrical AND open up other body parts as possible controllers.
I await those videos with interest.
How do you know that no one asked for that smiley face and its functionality? How about a parapalegic looking for a new way to interact with an instrument? And what you’re describing isn’t part of Garageband’s DNA. I mean of course it would be nice to have those things. But GB has always been a (cheap / free) entry-level DAW; a gateway drug to Logic Pro. Get them hooked and then they will spend money on the better drugs. It’s the musical equivalent to iMovie / FinalCut. That’s not being disconnected, that’s smart business.
Of course we don’t have Logic on iOS but that still doesn’t separate Gargeband from its intent as a basic environment that beginners can easily grasp. Getting upset over its lack of pro features just means you’re not who it’s built for. Thankfully we have multiple other options so it’s not really a big deal, you know?
But iTunes, yes. iTunes still sucks on a cosmic level.
I'm not saying it's a big deal. All I'm saying is they neglect the crucial items for fancy gimmicks. And the argument for giving paraplegics more musical tools, this is a specious argument. All it does is modulation. You still need some limb functionality in order to play a note, good luck playing a sequence of notes...
Semantics aside, the bigger picture of what I’m saying is that, what you consider crucial items and fancy gimmicks is the opinion of a pro user outside of GB’s target audience. It’s futile to cause a ruckus over these things.
I agree with both y’all.
The facial expression integration has brought smiles to tens of thousands of faces, that’s art. Do it for the culture
