MPE Is Bullsh— Hang On....

I'll admit when I'm wrong.
For a long time I've found the whole midi-keyboard imitation of expressive instruments (wind, brass, guitar) to be a waste of time. I'm never fooled by supposedly expressive guitar or violin patches.
Then I saw this. Wow. That is something.

  • Yep, cool stuff!

  • I'm so excited about the ongoing development of this.

Can't wait to build my own personal sample libraries that I can have expressive control of.
So much more waiting to do...

  • I have no interest in using electronics to emulate an acoustic instrument. That said, I want the most expressive electronic instruments I can get, and MPE is one major step towards that.

  • It really is pretty amazing. However like most things that require touch this is going to take some practice to get this really right. If you are a keyboard player perhaps you have enough knowledge of the key layout to have a leg up but then you still have to learn a whole 'nother level of expressive touch to make it sound anything like the demo video above.

Something to aspire to, for sure. I find the same happens with my guitar, always these guys have such amazing tone that comes from endless practice and attention to the detail of touch.

In other words, you and I are not going to sound like this without a ton of practice.

  • That Vangelis bit at the end....oh my.

    No kidding!

  • Brilliant, thanks. My Kind Of Blue and Star Wars in one performance.

  • Wow... both the tech and the player. I was similarly underwhelmed, but have seen the light!

  • Have yall seen this one? It may have been posted here recently but I can’t remember. As a huge Prince fan, I was impressed. Great musician, but his own improvs on the solo leads only prove that Prince was the ultimate in taste. Other than that, a fine video.

  • Yes, duplicating someone else’s (famous) solo seems to get a lot of attention but I’d rather see an original performance, or at least adding your spin to something. I tend to look at these as demonstrating the possibilities of expression, and the Roli keyboards are very good for that - I bought myself a Block a month ago and am very happy with it. And yes, as a proper instrument, it will reward a bit of practice in getting the most expressive performances from it.

exactly - you can use such things to pretend you're able to handle a classical instrument, but it's not the same. Maybe ok for the sound but neither for expression nor details.
Any controller (or controller app) needs practice.

IOS seems to be a lot about 'insta-success' as reflected in the constant request of more presets and the result when it comes to complex controllers like TC-11/Data.
It's really hard to find a video that shows a player who knows what he's doing, most are just about random tapping/swiping around.

It's cool that such gear is available for an affordable price, but there are lots of apps which have similiar features for free - if you take your time to explore them.
Myself just recently had a strange experience - being convinced that Zeeon is THE bass synth ruling them all (Model D wasn't released yet)... but then I fiddled with PPG's Infinity (after an endless time to figure out that matrix...) and was just blown away about it's capabilities in this domain.

It´s all a great marketing strategy and of course it all sound impressive. If you hear these tools in the hand of such talented people i wonder how long it takes for me to get a fraction of that dynamic too :)
But at the end it´s a bit of money making too rather than with what Roli started. I feel great for you iOS only folks but they forgot about their Seaboard Rise and maybe Grand customers (but not completely abandoned yet of course) and releasing these block packs one after one and putting their "toys" in the app store.
I think it´s more of a share holders than a musicians tool at this point. Maybe because of that they go well with Apple. They offer some great things but limit them in so many annoying ways and bugs get not solved (would be a long story to tell).
But think about if every developer had the money to bring out these videos where pro people showing what they can do with it. If you then also have a big brand (or rising) name you have a winner here.
I mean give them a synth app and let them play that trough an MPE controller and sales will rise maybe.
There are even videos out there where i got scared and feels unworthy to use these tool :)

Here it´s going maybe a bit off-topic but anyway i mean this is how you show a product and know how it can sound in the right hands...even without MPE :) Damn it´s so funky and it´s got me totally and i even not a friend of to funky things:

Funnily enough, been really enthusiastic about MPE but this demo doesn’t help me much. Arguably, this isn’t MPE since the SWAM sounds are monophonic (so it’s more about MIDI Monophonic Expression, which can work quite well on ROLI controllers).
Some of these excerpts go straight in the “uncanny valley”, for me. They sound too realistic to be really fake but there are moments with several of them when their artificial character comes through. Reminds me of singers in the Fifth Dimension or Farinelli. Stuff that IRCAM researchers cherish and a potentially cool æsthetic, but not necessarily my aim.
Having said that, did buy most of these SWAM Engine soundpacks and find it really sad that they can only be used with ROLI controllers within Noise (unlike Equator sounds which are also available in the AUv3 version of Noise). Would love to use them with a wind controller. Not to do covers of existing tunes but to explore diverse musical horizons.

  • My gut feeling is the makers / management of Roli are fools, hoping to bleed the consumer towards only their own products. (and I am a HUGE fan of the tech.)
    Stupid corporate dreamers...

  • I enjoyed ROLI Noise sounds but you can't use their sound solo commercially (for a game for ex.), you have to add another sound from you, so no sound effect or music with only Roli sounds :(

  • I mean Roli even don´t let me customize my Rise in the desktop dashboard like i would need. No updates since months and months. It often "forgets" my settings and i can´t save custom templates/cc mappings for different use cases etc.
They created a wonderful hardware and put really annoying and limited software into it. Why? To release more and more half baked hard- and software to please the shareholders.
I mean it sounds harsh and the Seaboard is still a kind of it´s own but i´m really dissapointed with Roli and not sure if i would buy another thing from them. The customer support is super great and friendly (like with Apple) but mostly not helpful at the end (like with Apple).
But i think it´s a thing which is we have to live with these days. Small companies with innovative tools getting bigger and then go mad with all over to please shareholders and consumer until one day the bubble bursts.

  • And to add.....why the hell they don´t let me customize the slide f.e. I can´t set it to anything other than the default midi CC74 which plays not always well with some tools. I can use midi modifier in Logic and maybe there is an iOS midi FX which does the same but it´s not what i would call innovative and user friendly.

  • I don't really care for emulations of acoustic instruments for aesthetic reasons, but I do acknowledge the demo in the OP is a very good one.

  • Demo of MPE support on the Micromonsta.

  • Nice little demo of using Geoshred as an MPE controller for Model D
