iRig question

Hey Audiobussers.

For some reason I assumed I could plug my guitar straight into my headphone socket and all would be well, but of course the fallacy of this has come to bear. Why after a year I am only just getting around to wanting to bring my guitar into the iPad mix is simply a testament to the many wonders of digital groovery that have distracted me thus far.

So I am forced to consider this iRig lark. I've looked on the IK website and am not sure which to get. Is the PRO the best all round or can I settle for the basic iRig or would the HD be a better bet? Is there that much difference really between those two?

Any helpful comments much appreciated!

  • I'm not familiar witht the Pro version, but there is a big difference between the basic iRig and the HD version. The basic one plugs into the headphone jack and you can get a lot of crosstalk/bleed over; you will hear the headphone output in the guitar app. The basic works OK if you are just playing guitar and not recording. The HD version plugs into the lightning/pin jack and converts to digital before it goes into the iDevice, thus eliminating the bleeding of the headphone output into the input. I own both and i think the HD version is fine. You might want to also look into the Apogee line. They make nice stuff.

  • Connecting to the lightning or 30-pin port (depending on iPad model) will produce better results than anything that uses the headphone socket. The headphone socket is plagued by crosstalk issues.
Cheapest way is to use the guitar cable that comes with the Rocksmith game (also available seperately) with the appropriate USB/Camera connection kit for your iPad.

  • I use iRig HD and its excellent, very clean and noiseless...be sure you get iRig HD and not just iRig..plus HD Has all the connectors..e.g 30 pin and Lightning...and apart from the fact that its amazing for guitars you can also record any mono feed into it too...here is a video I made showing it recording other stuff..check out the channel theres loads of useful stuff on there..

  • There is also Apogee Jam and Line 6 Sonic Port to consider. The Jam has a pretty stellar reputation, and the Line 6 Sonic Port comes with the Line 6 POD app which has a lot of free amps and FX for Line 6 users.

  • I had the iRig HD and now I have the iRig Pro.
The Pro is a little bit better than the HD in sound quality, more volume boost, it has more features, I don't know if you need MIDI e mic imput, but maybe is better having that features.
Don't consider the standard irig, it is a toy compared to his big brothers!

+1 for line6 sonic port. it has stereo input (irigpro has mono), i use a stereo spliter, so i can input my instrument and a microphone to my sonic port, and take advantage of many apps that can process both inputs separately (hopefully audiobus will very soon!!!).

line6 sonic port also has 2 outputs: headphone output OR 1.4" out for a big pea, and you can use both outs at the same time. (irig has no out... you have to use the idevice out. more cables attached to your device!).

the quality of all digital interfaces in the market is similar. the only noticeable difference is between analog and digital interfaces... very noticeable.

always that a product has the "pro" or "HD" label, i look it twice. most of the times it is just standard gear with a costume.

if you have an ipad, the only "pro" option, is to use a soundcard with the CCK.

  • mmmmm...

my sonic port works very well. but i have been taking a look to their forums, and it looks very dark, it doesn't work for many people:

unfortunately we still don't have a company that makes serious gear for idevices.

  • Go with anything that does not connect throughout the headphone jack. apogee Jam, irig HD, irig Pro, griffin StudioConnect (iPad), etc. The digital/dock interfaces work much better and provide great sound.

  • +1 for Apogee Jam with its line feedback light and dock connector. Small. Powerful. Perfect. Pick it up at your local Apple Store (in the US at least).

  • Thanks everyone - looks like I'll be searching eBay for a Jam or iRig HD. They do all seem pretty cynically priced considering what they are...

Normally I transfer my iPad doodlings to my music PC and finish them off on there but with things like BIAS and the like coming to iPad, I might as well try an all in one.

    Cheers again :-)

  • I thought the Apogee Jam was way overpriced right up until I plugged it in the first time. I had the iRig and the iLynk to compare it to before that (and they made my ears hurt), so it was a massive upgrade and eye opening experience for me.
