Thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales. How to make and save money to fund your music hobby
If you take the time to frequent your local thrift stores, garage sales, and estate sales you can score some amazing music gear for cheap!
Here are some tips to get you started:
I try to go to 3 different thrift stores atleat once a week.
Patience and perseverance is the key.
Don’t get frustrated. Some days I find nothing. Other days I find all kinds of interesting stuff.
Make friends with the employees and buy them pizza occasionally. Try to get them to call you when things come in.
Don’t hesitate to buy things you know you can trade or resell if the price is to good to pass up.
Check to make sure it powers on and is in decenct condition.
Learn how to circuit bend!
Buying cheapy battery powered keyboards and toys and installing crappy effect pedals or circuit bending is a great way to make extra money towards more gear.
Have your friends and family members who go to garage sales or estate sales be on the look out for you.
Old organs many times are free if you move them. Often time they contain a synthesizer worth gutting.
At garage or estate sales buy multiple items and ask for a discount.
Never appear overly excited. Once I had a cashier refuse the sale saying it was already purchased.
At thrift stores before you buy keyboards go to the area where they sell the cords and adapters. Usually the adapter you need is there and many times they won’t even charge you for it because they assume it goes with it.
Bring your phone and google items on eBays recently sold tab if you quickly need to price something.
Grab a cart at the thrift store. If you have too many items and have to set something down someone else may grab it.
Think outside the box. Sometimes I find random interesting items that make good cases, stands, mounts knobs etc.
If the price is to high one week, check back later. Eventually everything gets marked down.
It’s hard to say what my best find was since I do this quite often.
