  • Last video of the series is out: Part 4 on the interplay between Pen2Bow and the virtual string instruments by Audio Modeling. This part is about the SWAM Double Bass. It also includes a summary of my three month experience with Pen2Bow and the SWAM string instruments:

  • Thanks for the video(s). Tipped me off the fence into buying :)

  • Here is a live performance of the piece Sicilienne by M.T. Von Paradis using Pen2Bow and the SWAM Cello:

  • @InfoCheck, Pen2Bow 1.1 is now an AUv3 plugin in iOS

We just released a major update to Pen2Bow. In version 1.1, Pen2Bow can now be used as an AUv3 plugin within Audio Unit hosts. This allows you to open multiple instances of Pen2Bow, to wire each instance with a different instrument and to save and recall the parameters as part of a whole session. Watch the video for more details:

    Hope you enjoy the update!

Amazing! Love the concept of using the Apple Pencil as a plugin with music apps. Will be buying this today!!

  • Thanks a lot for the new MIDI AUv3 feature. Allowing multiple instances with different settings for different synth is a big plus. The parameter recall when loading sessions will be very convenient :)

  • Im interested in this but I read a review that this doesn't work with the new (2018) iPad Pros. Can this be true? Doesn't make sense.

The 2018 iPad Pro is absolutely fine. I tried to get in touch with this one person who gave that review but I was not succesful. I thus have no idea what the issue there might have been.

  • Pretty cool now it’s a AU for controlling CC in many unusual ways you can actually control the CC of other midi AU control apps ie Rozeta etc pretty mind boggling. Looking forward to trying it out with desktop apps.

  • I've heard the new iPad Pro does not work with the first gen pencil and the new pencil doesn't work with the older pros. Maybe that is what they were referring to.

thank you for your feedback. I thought to include the midi channel in the very first version (1.0) but decided against it because Pen2Bow anyways cannot produce output on multiple channels. You cannot use e.g. two apple pencils at the same time. And setting the pencil and the virtual keyboard to two different channels did not seem useful to me as they need to drive the same virtual instrument or synth. Would you mind giving me information about your usecase that would benefit from a channel change?

  • @AudioMotion
Here is my usecase : I am doing an ambiant song. I have two synths in AUM. One is receiving on channel one, the second on channel two. Both synths are playing some notes simultaneously. Now I would like to make the song evolving by changing some specific settings on the first synth using one instance of Pen2Bow, then make the song evolving on the second synth using a second Pen2Bow instances...and then back to the first, etc. I think I can use the first instance to send cc 1,2,3,4 on channel 1 and the second instance to send cc 5,6,7,8 on channel 1. My problem is that both synths will receive all cc (1 to 8) and I have to deactivate the cc I don’t want to use on each synth and this is a bit a pain to do. And of course I would like to have more than 2 instances. I really see this as an amazing tool to make big changes in a complex ambiant songs...

Thank you very much for explaining. I have to admit, this is a more complex setup than I ever envisioned Pen2Bow being used in. I think I have a few questions about the details of the setup, in particular, why the two synths need to listen to different channels. But I don't want to highjack this thread. There is no PM in this forum, correct? Do you have an account on vi.control? We could continue the discussion there. Or shall we make a new thread here?

    @AudioMotion and users.

What sensitivity settings do people find best to control cut off and resonance etc ?

Maybe the easiest way to explain what I have in mind is to redirect you to the Rozeta LFO app that implements a similar behavior

On the pics below, you can see this AU app and how you can choose not only the cc but also the channel out. This is a very convenient way to control specific midi parameters. And of course you can have several instances running simultaneously.

Thanks a lot, but what I don't understand is why would you change the Rozeta LFO MIDI CH from 1 to lets say 2? The synth that listens could just listen on channel 1. And different instances of the Rozeta LFO could be connected to different synths, that should be possible. Rozeta LFO 1 could control synth 1 and Rozeta LFO 2 could control synth 2, all on channel 1. The reason why I am trying to understand this usecase in such a detail is because a new version of Pen2Bow with an added channel setting would break projects that were created with the old version. AUv3 hosts allow virtually no changes in the parameters that are being saved by the host.

My usage is for convenience reasons. One example: If I load 2 synths in AUM, both will have the volume control set to cc 7 by default and the channel will be set by default to 1 for the first synth and 2 for the second. Now with Rozeta, I can simply have 2 instances and set everything there. With your app, I will have to turn both channels to 1 and choose another cc for the second synth, 8 for example. I think it is much more flexible with Brambos app.

Yes I see. I will give it again a though and try to incorporate a channel setting in the next update. Thanks again so much for your input, sorry for asking all those details.

The sensitivity settings depend on how a particular synth patch reacts to the input controllers. That is a personal preference. I typically set the sensitivity while playing around until I am happy.

  • Is anyone using this to drive synth parameters yet? Would love feedback as this is how I would be using it. Seems great and well done but I'm kinda on the fence wondering if it would really be useful expressively...

I do. You can control up to 4 parameters per instance (and as it is an AU now, you can have several instances and have a lot of parameters!). In my opinion, this is a very expressive app. Each position is a bit more appropriate to a certain kind of parameter. For exemple, the « force » one is not very easy to use should you want to have a stable and subtle feeling but it is great for vibrato and fast changing parameter. The « acceleration » one is perfect for bow-like feeling when used with the volume (and demoed in the differents video above). The two other functions (orientation and tilt) are very precise. And what is amazing is that you can change everything simultaneously

Thanks a lot. This app is remarkable!

  • @AudioMotion...first what an outstanding app. I've got some questions and joined this fantastic forum just to ask. Please bear with my lack of ipad experience. One , will/can this ever be ported to a full mac application, where latency might not be so high , which might be able to support a magictrackpad , or a wacom , or other expressive controllers ? Maybe a garageband plugin? Two, have you tried alternative pencils ? Obviously the high cost of apple's pencils is a factor, but I know there's little competition there. And last, do you foresee any improvement with latency on the cheaper ipads. I personally find the cost of the pro....painful. thanks, and again congrats on this app.

  • Thank you very much @kurth for your kind words. Considering the use of a graphics tablet (like wacom): That is a good idea and I actually tried to make this work but there is an obstacle that i was never able to overcome. If you connect a graphics tablet to a mac or pc, it will take over the function of the mouse. And this interferes with the control of the DAW. As far as I know, the only way to prevent that is to change or replace the drivers of the device. This is beyond my technical capabilities, in my attempts I managed to crash my mac:) Concerning the use of alternative pencils: Most pencils on the market don't use the high resolution tracking system of the iPad, they just mimic the finger. But the resolution of the finger sensor is not enough to accurately estimate pencil velocities. But if you use a pencil that relies on the same technology for tracking as the Apple Pencil, then it should be fine. But make sure you get one that also supports tilt and orientation, that makes it much more fun. Having said that, I personally would recommend the Apple Pencil. Concerning the latency: I have an old iPad Pro that has the same latency (about 20ms) as the new (6th gen) iPad (not iPad Pro). To me, the action feels instantaneous. While on paper 20ms might sound like a lot, the accuracy of a human hand moving a bow-like device is lower than the accuracy that a human hand can achieve with a drum-like device (e.g. AKAI pads).

  • Can it control notes entered into already interred into Atom2?

  • Just the Apple Pencil then? No Logitech?

  • Can this be made to work with GeoShred? If somebody know how, please let us know!
