best current way to wirelessly use iPad or iPhone with computer?

I'm just getting back into transferring midi and audio to and from my iMac. I've completely forgotten how to do this. I have an iConnectMIDI2+ but have lost my camera connection kit 30pin to lightning adapter and it appears they are enormously expensive and the ones for sale on ebay don't appear to work with iPhone X. Thought I'd try the wireless thing for the time being.

Any tips on best wireless working method would be greatly appreciated. Or if you have a spare adapter laying around you are not using, maybe I could buy it from you? :)

  • P.S. I have an iPhone and iPad and plan on using both.

  • Streaming real-time, or just transferring files? If just transferring files, AudioShare plus your iMac browser. Done.

Thanks. I mean streaming to and from a DAW in real-time.

  • Why bother with wireless streaming, with its various problems. You could just take a line out from your headphone socket, or get one of the iDocks.

  • I’m no help with real-time on a Mac. PC schlep only.

For midi use Bluetooth if you can for wireless, audio I'd use the Audio via USB.

  • For both use the usb-to lighning cable.

  • Best way to share audio is using your iOS 11+ device as an audio source with IDAM but you need to connect with the lightning cable. For MIDI stuff, both send and receive is works perfectly with CoreMIDI Network Session, which you can setup from the 'Audio MIDI Setup' app on your Mac. And make sure both your iOS and Mac connected the same wireless network.

You can also setup IDAM from Audio MIDI Setup app, open the 'Devices' window, enable your iOS device, set audio in source from audio settings.

Also, midimittr is an excellent app for sending/receiving MIDI between your Mac and iOS with the lightning cable. You can download it for free both on your iOS and Mac devices.

    +1
I use Midimittr a lot, it works for me and it’s free! Studiomux is another option, but its not free and it had a lot of issues when iOS 11 hit, so I haven’t used it in awhile.

  • Thanks everyone, this has been super helpful!!! And I'm up and working without the clunky 30pin to lightning adapter. Thanks @cem_olcay. I hadn't heard of IDAM before this morning (somehow), puts its working perfectly. Might even up and sell my iConnectMIDI 2+! Very much appreciated.

Consider rtpMIDI for MIDI over wifi and Studiomux for wired audio connectivity to/from your idevice to your PC (it can be broken sometimes). <-- this is a relatively inexpensive option
