How to HOLD sustain pedal in keyboard apps

I've got some piano stuff in the works and need to be able to play relatively length passages with the sustain pedal on. My Akai MPK Mini has a sustain button but it has to be held on with a finger; it isn't like a toggle mode (on/off). I use SampleTank for my piano sounds usually, and it also has a sustain function, but again, it has to be held down, not toggled.

Is there a way using MIDI or otherwise I can lock the sustain effect on?

Also, is there a way to do a soft pedal (the left pedal on a piano)?

Can you get close to what you're looking for by turning up the release on the piano sound in Sampletank?

  • Can you remap CCs in Sampletank or the Akai? Even a rotary knob might be better than a momentary switch.

  • I reckon you could use MIDIBridge to do this if you have it.

Thinking about this some more... tape is not an option, lol. Release control isn't quite the same.

@funjunkie27 -- I was thinking about this approach too. In fact, the MPK Mini comes with a PC software app that can edit the MIDI CCs for each control. So I can assign one knob to CC 64 (sustain) and one knob to CC 67 (soft). Those CCs aren't "expressive" so it's off from 0-63 and on from 64-127. Then I can just pan the knobs left or right of center to alter sustain or soft. It's not ideal, but it's a temporary solution. I won't be able to expressively adjust those in real time like a foot pedal, but hey.

Thinking of other hardware options as well... If I could buy or DIY a really cheap USB MIDI foot controller that'd be great.

  • This guy would be sweet: Take any old 1/4" jack sustain pedal (which I own) and adapt it to MIDI over USB with configurable CC/sustain/expression control:

    $50 though...

So I was just reading through the MPK Mini manual and it turns out the pads themselves can be set to CC send controls, with assignable CCs and selectable momentary/toggle operation. So now I can just assign pads to do this instead of knobs. Pretty much the same thing as a latched Sustain button. Nice!

  • Cool! I didn't know that! :-)
