Double the RAM, approximate specs going from 1300 (single core) & 2300 (multi core) to 3500 (sc) & 5900 (mc)...

    I'd say it's pretty dramatic.

  • It's pretty tempting but I have no idea what significance those strange numbers have..

  • Almost triple the performance. That's a massive upgrade.

  • From the Air 1 it’s a no brainer.
From the Air 2 it’s tempting as long as you can live with the non laminated screen!

Can't help it, I see the 'gap' every time I look at a non-laminated screen :(
Waiting for the next batch of Pro's before I consider an upgrade...

Yeah it worries me that I will feel the same, but I can’t warrant the extra nearly double price at this time, as the base model Pro is too small storage option.

Yeah, 64GB is on the low side for the Pro's. Maybe we'll see 128GB as 'base' for the next batch of Pro's.
I'm in no rish to get a new iPad at the moment, next 'investment' will likely be an iPhone when my old one gives up...

  • How big a deal is RAM with musicking on an iPad? Back in the day, when I used to look at upgrading a laptop, I'd always pay close attention to how much RAM was included (and whether it was expandable). The new iPad looks good, but I'm wondering if 2 GB of RAM is future proof enough?

As long as the base is 2gb and a large portion of the install base are using 1gb ram machines, Apple will not open up the ram use fully. At the moment and probably until all Apple machines are at least 4gb, It’s really not much of an issue for running single apps.

So yeah, more ram is always better, but it’s not as bad as the laptop world where devs push everything to the max!

  • Depends on what you are doing. For some applications air1 is plenty powerful

  • I did and love it but get the 128 gig it will be the best experience.

  • Anybody can comment on iPad 2017/2018 non laminated screen vs pro’s models ones? Is it an issue for touchscreen playing (keyboards, drums, etc), any added latency, different feeling under fingers?

Well this is the thing ! Mr. Good on my right hand side says do it ! Your 3-4 year old iPad Air.. despite being in mint condition is only 32 gb and constantly reminding you are very low on storage .. it's a few generations behind the latest 9.7 ..so surely the 9.7 is superior in most circumstances. whilst Mr. Bad on my left side says ... yeah but what about the latest iPad Pro users who STILL COMPLAIN ABOUT CRACKLING with some apps ...looking at you model 15. So, is it really all about the ram etc ?

    .

  • To me since I came from an iPad Air 1, the screen is similar and beautiful! All my apps look stunning and the touch works perfectly for pads on GR16 or what ever app. But just having more space and more cpu juice means I can really load effects apps in AUM, Cubasis and Auria with no issues; and still not have to convert to audio until the last possible step. But I might just start converting to audio since Cubasis has a fix on the works.

This will always be the case on every computing device.

No matter how fast the new Intel CPU's will be, you will immediately find lots of posts on the Ableton forum from people running into performance problems with plugins X, Y & Z.

Looking at it this way, it's never about the CPU or RAM. The performance gain still stands though.

  • I think it‘s an amzing upgrade from an iPad Air. Especially when you can still sell the old Air for at least 200€ — effectively you‘re getting twice the RAM much faster processor, pencil support, better camera and new battery for under 150€ (or 240 for the 128GB).
    Hard to resist ...

Apple offered £125 trade in ... I'd rather keep it :D

yeah, I saw that too and would not sell my iPad at that price ...
but other traders offer between 260 and 280 for my model. So the upgrade to the 128 GB would only cost me 180 € , including twice the storage I have now.

  • I sold my 32 gig Air 1 for $175 helped a lot to get new 2017 iPAD. So glad I did.

Terrible upgrade, great add on, Selling an Air 1 for $175 is a false economy unless things are very tight (The way of the world right now sadly)
Nothing else you could buy for that money will do as much as an Air 1 can do, and they will work together great.

It’s weird, we have pro’s and non pro’s at work and I can barely notice the difference. Maybe years of using super gappy Cintiqs have made me immune to the poison.

I did the exact same upgrade and went from being massively frustrated by limitations to excited by possibilities.

    $175 = £125 for a mint 32 GB IPAD air. Jog on.
I'd rather keep it as a secondory sound module.

  • I thought about it, but money was tight and really needed the upgrade.
