IPad Hardware Sequencing (doable 2018?)

Hey.
I just got a new iPad pro and was wondering if and what midi sequencer apps can reliably sequence hardware synths? I've done a little homework and it seems modstep is pretty good but then people were posting glitches and jitter issues. Is there a solution that is fairly rock solid in 2018 or is this still a work in progress?

For my own work flow I find traditional hardware step sequencers very limiting and convoluted for a traditional song construction. If the goal is repetition of patterns over and over with maybe some transposition great but to build a full song seems insanely messy and difficult at best. I would rather use a tool like an iPad that is graphical like my daw and way less limitations compared to a traditional step sequencer.

Of course an iPad and midi sequencing app is only good if everything syncs properly and the timing is solid. Thanks all.

  • Cubasis, Beatmaker, Modstep all work fine here, get a multi output MIDI interface and don't try and do everything on one port.
It isn't Atari ST/Hardware tight, but then neither is the fastest PC or Mac in 2018 either.

Thanks. Are you able to incorporate that into your Mac or pc daw for recording purposes or is it all encompassed in the iPad daw/app? What I'm trying to do is perform independently from my pc with my iPad and hardware synths and then if I want to record it and process it further use Reaper on my pc.

My main concern is just jamming and composing independent of the computer.

  • i use modstep. works well.
cubasis clock it a bit jitttery but the sequencer is a bit more versatile than modstep as far as odd time sigs and arranging goes
bm3 has issues with muting, tracks still send data out. so if you're switching between tracks sending to the same hardware, there'll be conflict. if not, it pretty good too.
best to watch some vids and see which appeals most with your intended work flow. they've all got their pro's.

  • @mrcanister
BM3 has a setting for muting to change what MIDI is sent when, is that not working out for you/broken ?

    @HydraGen
I use BM3 and Reaper on desktop mainly but i like the pad/pattern workflow of BM3, apparently the next version of Beatmaker has MIDI export according to the developer, so that will be nice, right now i just export audio.

been thru this on the bm3 forum. tracks still output data (note offs) even when muted. it's a specific way of playing really. probably not a lot of people like to un/mute tracks on the fly. but if you have sequences outputting to the same destination, the muted ones will cut corresponding notes off. its quite odd the way it's been implemented. like a faux mute! doesn't seem to be much of an issue, so presumably people don't use the sequencer that way.

  • Sorry, i don't really understand.
You have the option to set it up to mute audio or mute MIDI or mute both, muting only MIDI will not mute notes offs, so i am a little confused what you need ?
I don't see how many that options for the users to choose from could ever be seen as set up odd ?
