  • Saw him play a few times. Such an amazing pianist.

  • was just last week talking to Tony Oxley,, he mentioned he didn't think Cecil would make it back on stage.. a sad sad coincidence..
Hang in there Tony!! ( he's 80 in june )
and condolences to all who had a connection to the crazy powerhouse CT.
    :(

  • Amazing musician and innovator. RIP.

  • A god. Every once in a while you convince yourself that he's just smashing keys. Then he plays the exact same impossibly voiced key smash again.

1:28-1:32 kills me. I can't stop rewinding it. The pickups at 1:31 are just...

  • He was doing a one-week workshop when I was in college. Several of us convinced the owner of the local rock club to put him on the bill one night. Unfortunately, said owner pulled the plug on Taylor within 10 minutes. Philistine!

A revealing story, for sure. But anyone who saw CT play and opened themselves up to the experience surely has never forgotten it. Rest easy, job well done, Cecil Taylor.

  • I saw him live in a few different settings - always overwhelming. I haven't heard his name in a while, and kinda gasped with I saw the news.

  • Interesting how he has his glasses and papers sitting on the piano wires like that. Ive heard of using "prepared piano" but that usually involves really f-ing it up, this was pretty casual looking.

I saw that movie at its premiere at LA Filmfest back in the early 80s. There was a documentary about Art Pepper on the same bill. I saw Art's wife Laurie as I was waiting in line to buy a ticket and said hi and she got me in for free. I had forgotten all about this little episode in my life until I saw the clip above. Sure wish I could have caught CT live one time. He was a monster.

  • one of my favorites. an early inspiration. such a visionary! RIP

  • I jammed with him at his loft once!
