iPad Lightning camera adapter and IDAM into mac pro. Help
Hello everyone,
New to using the ipad in my music studio setup and need a little help. My goal is to integrate some moog ipad synths into my mac pro DAW workflow. I can do this using IDAM & audio midi setup on the mac; connect my lightning cable to a USB hub connected to my mac pro, enable the ipad in audio midi setup, and I'm able to trigger midi and audio via the lightning connection. AWESOME!! One small problem though, my ipads battery drains when using this setup as its not connected directly into the computer, but instead into a USB hub (the computer is 20 feet away to reduce noise while recording).
In my research there doesn't exist a USB hub that will both power an ipad as well as allow for data transfer. But apparently the apple camera kit does, so I purchased the official apple camera adapter, plugged the lightning side into the provided ipad charger and the USB from the camera connection into my USB hub connected to my computer, and though I'm now getting power to the ipad, the computer doesn't recognize the ipad anymore in audiomidi setup. Unplug the camera kit, plug in a lightning cable into the same USB hub connected to my computer, and the ipad is recognized.
Any help? How do I solve the issue of using my ipad with my DAW but not loose battery while using the ipad?

Hi,
Not sure if still would charge but did you think of this ?
PTC - 20 Meters (64 Feet) USB 2.0 Active Extension / Repeater Cable A Male to A Female - Supports High Speed USB2.0 480 Mbps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0040IASMS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_jZAYAbF2Z9HZM.
All the best
yeah, tried that but unfortunately the usb extender, like my powered USB hub, does not charge the ipad while its in use.
Usb cord that long is very likely to get problems without some booster. The problem with not getting enough juice from mac to charge is likely about low power usb ports. Does your computer have some ports that can push more power? But the thing is that with my air2, if i have an aum session open(same when viewing youtube), the charger can only keep the battery level the same, doesent give enough power to actually charge the device
Thanks for the advice ToMess! I will have to run more tests. Perhaps my extender is not a booster?
Also, what good does the camera kit do exactly? Is it just for sending signals to the ipad, like in hooking up USB keyboards to the ipad? Or can you send data from the ipad as well? I guess it doesn't do IDAM, but would like to somehow test if the camera kit or USB cable might be bad.
I have an iPad connected via USB/IDAM for development all the time. If connected to the iMac directly it should still charge while in this mode.
Connect directly, don't use a hub.
The best but most expensive way however is to use a dedicated interface like iConnectAudio4+.
I agree, and if I could connect directly I would. Like I mentioned in the first post though, my computer is 20 feet away from my recording area, and it seems 20 foot lightning cables do not exist. Tried using a USB extender I had here and it does connect, but it doesn't charge (ipad says not charging), though I need to see if perhaps it will at least keep my ipad from loosing as much charge while in use.
But it seems for sure I have no need for the camera kit, correct? As it doesn't seem to recognize my computer at all. Ideally I would buy an iConnectAudio4+ but unfortunately its a bit out of my price range.
Approaching this from another angle...does your computer REALLY need to be 20 feet away? I get what you are doing in theory but this seems like overkill. I would bet that almost every professional producer has a computer in their studio these days. If interference really was a problem maybe it could be isolated without moving the whole computer.
And also airplay could be a solution for such setups...
You'll only need the camera connection kit for hooking up external usb audio/midi gear to your iPad. When connecting to a Mac you can just use a regular lightning cable.
Anyway, what you're trying to do should definitely be possible.
I have a similar setup here, iMac on one side of the room, most gear on the other.
Just checked with a powered hub which is connected to the iMac via 5m usb cable (just a basic cable, no extender) and a 2017 iPad Pro -> charges fine even in IDAM mode.
