IDAM has no sound on Mac

I am using ios 11.3 and Macos 10.13.4. My iPad is connected to the Mac via lightning to USB. It is enabled and recognized in the Audio utility. When I play something on my iPad I get no sound from my Mac's speakers (or the iPad's for that matter).
Is it supposed to work that way or is it just for recording?
Thanks

You need a DAW or other program which let you stream the audio and record it.
You could use the free Garage Band f.e.

  • Ah, I was hoping just to be able to route my iPad's audio through my Mac's speakers so I don't have to keep switching the speaker cable from my Mac to the iPad. Thanks

Try this 'Freebie' app. It used to be called LineIn.
    https://rogueamoeba.com/soundsource/ (Forget this, it's 10 minutes 'free')

Get the old LineIn from here which is free for ever...
    https://rogueamoeba.com/legacy/

It's a simple way to route any input to any output, so you can just play the iPad and listen thru the Mac speakers, now DAW connection needed to enable monitoring.

  • Nice! That works. Thanks!
